Hi! I've noticed in the last few days a new marketing stragegy with our emails. Not that I dislike the notifications but I'd love to chose the frequency and what i'm notified about from tumblr instead of hubspot (that only shows two options: marketing and one-to-one). Best regards :-)

We are glad to hear you liked the email. Music to our ears, in fact.

So, in short, you’re part of a test group! We are constantly exploring ways to get the very finest, the crème de la crème Tumblr content in front of people. Unfortunately, however, there are no more detailed email controls at the present time. That said, we try our best to not send emails to uninterested users. So we also automatically remove disinterested users from sends, no one wants to be bombarded with emails they don’t read!

Also, as much as I support tumblr making a move toward monetization (I'm glad it's survived for so long, all things considered) I really hope your team is looking into figures like Yael Eisenstat who have spoken out about the business model of companies like Meta. Please operate differently. This is the only social media I use because it's been able to escape the trend of toxicity, emotional manipulation and extremism. It's not only due to the community on Tumblr, but the way the site has been designed for all these years. I hope Tumblr grows in a way that leads the way for humane social networking sites going forward and doesn't follow in the footsteps of the sites that are literally fuelling the deterioration of civil society. First things first: yes! We think this is a fabulous idea and we’re happy to keep the Ask box open for a few more. We will now open the Ask box for an extended three hours from next Monday, June 27, meaning it will run from 9AM to 9PM EST—a whole 12 hours.

Second things, well, second. This is a great question and a chance to give you and the community a little insight into the nuts and bolts workings at Tumblr. The core team that oversees the blog here at Work in Progress is pretty small, and the effort required to receive, draft, and answer your questions is more than you might think.

Don’t get us wrong—it’s a job we love and never take for granted. We like to think small touches like WIP are what set Tumblr apart from other platforms. However, for the moment, this small touch requires a surprising amount of work for a small unit. But we would love to open up for a few more hours and see if this helps out users from each and every corner of our lovely blue dot. We are glad you appreciate our work, as we love it too.

It’s an important one, too, and could not have come at a better time. It’s been a touch busy here at HQ with new hellsite features such as Post+, the tip jar, and the new notes view, to name just a few. Amid these spinning plates, we couldn’t help but notice our ask queue creep up to 1,000 and counting.

Who is ‘we,’ exactly? Well, we’re a friendly mix of folk from different teams. We’re fewer than you might expect, and pulling the best possible answers from many different points of expertise across the company takes a lot more time and coordination than you might expect.

@wip exists as a direct channel between you, the humans who make up our community, and us, the humans who have the joy of running these spaces and answering your questions. It’s time-consuming, but we love to do it—and we are psyched to collaborate with you like this. It’s what sets Tumblr apart from, well, pretty much everywhere else.

Thanks for all you've been doing recently, I love how you seem to be listening to feedback from the users, especially with trying to make the website sustainable without selling all of our data (also the crabs on April fools, they were cute). Anyways, I was just wondering, how does the "trending" part of the website work? Is it based on absolute numbers or relative numbers of posts? Or some combination? Because sometimes I see tags like "photography" or "aesthetics" trending, which just seems like there's absolutely nothing else going on, and then I'll see something fairly obscure/only interesting to one country (that's not the US) trending and wonder if that community really has more posts than one of those standard tags. Would tags like "queue", "ask" or "submission" ever trend or are they blocked for being too common? Hi @arvit, thanks for your questions.

The trending section is complicated! There’s an algorithm on the backend that looks at tags within a certain time frame and ranks them based on a few factors, including the number of original posts made with each tag and the number of reblogs those posts receive. Trending is global, not locked to specific regions, so you might see topics from other countries (like news, sports events, or TV shows) in the trending section.

The trending section is monitored by some folks several times each day. We keep an eye on things and often combine related topics that should be clustered together (like the name of a TV show and the actors in that show, or a musician and their new album’s name).

As far as tags like “queue” and “ask” go, we consider those tags to be “post metadata”—while they do trend frequently, they’re not tags we allow to appear in the trending section. We also don’t allow big vague terms like “relatable” or “meme”, but we do allow the names of specific memes like “horse plinko”.

These are two broad and generic terms that trended recently, edging more specific topics out of the trending page. I was curious why that is?

Hi @the-best-url-on-this-site, thanks for your questions!

As we’ve said in the past, the trending section is complicated. It updates pretty frequently, and it’s up to two folks to monitor it. Sometimes we’re busy working on other projects or in meetings, so there can be a lag where things aren’t bucketed together right away. Even when topics are bucketed together, if enough people use just one of the grouped tags, the algorithm will separate them. Take this example. If enough folks just tag “Gerard Way” and not “MCR,” the tool will assume those are two separately trending topics, even if we’ve manually combined them.

As far as your second question about big vague terms, the answer boils down to this: “the tool has been around for a long time, and our policies have evolved over the years.” Sometimes tags (like “joke”) are incorrectly flagged as “trend-able,” and when that happens, we update them!

Currently, our active official blogs are @action, @art, @best-of-reblogs, @blackexcellence, @books, @celebrate, @changes, @engineering, @entertainment, @fandom, @fashion, @gaming, @happytuesday, @kpop, @getloudr, @music, @postitforward, @thequeerestplaceontheinternet, @radar, @tee, @tips, @wip, and, of course, @staff in many different languages.

There’s also a few we cooked up for April Fools that you can check out (Memories, Tumbeast Wildlife Center, Tumblcoin Trading Desk, Tumblr24 News, to name a few) if you’re feeling a little nostalgic.

Looks like a ton on paper, but our aim is to create spaces for all of the things that not only interest our users, but bring them together!
