The discussion emphasised the importance of investment matching the scale of global need and the power of collaborative action to scale solutions more quickly. Born out of a 2022 initiative supported by MTV’s Mental Health Youth Action Forum at the White House, the Fund acknowledges the challenges many young people face in accessing traditional mental health services – from long wait times to financial barrier – and elevates diverse community-led solutions to address a critical need. My dance card was full during last week’s World Health Assembly #WHA77 A key theme that was addressed was #mental health, #financing, & integrating mental health care goals into the discussion for 2025’s UN High-Level meeting on NCDs. The fact that advocacy on mental health had reached a turning point was palpable in the packed conference room at McKinsey Health Institute’s event on financing mental health. The Coalition for Mental Health Investment (CMHI), founded by the Clinton Global Initiative, McKinsey Health Institute, Kokoro , and Wellcome Trust, aims to close this financing gap. This is essential for achieving two of the World Health Organization’s Triple Billion targets: one billion more people benefiting from universal health coverage, and one billion more enjoying better health and well-being. While data and economics are pertinent, the panelists and audience agreed that de-stigmatization and a push towards well-being and adequate access remain highly important. The stakes couldn't be higher; * Global Prevalence: Dan Chisholm highlighted that 1 in 8 people globally live with a mental health condition, and 1 in 10 people suffer from major depression. * Funding Gaps: Low- and middle-income countries spend less than 2% of their health budgets on mental health, leaving households to bear the burden. The global annual mental health finance gap is at least $200 billion, with aid for mental health dropping by a third from 2018 to 2021, from $300 million to $200 million * Development Assistance: If government international aid agencies increased their investment to 1% of their overall development assistance for health, there would be almost an extra half-billion dollars available per year * Innovative Financing: Innovative financing mechanisms, such as catalytic funds and impact investment funds, can help address the estimated $371 billion annual funding gap for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 in low- and middle-income countries In addition to a full dance card, my reading list is overflowing post WHA as well, including the Economist Impact's report on reframing mental health Let’s continue working together to create a future where mental health investment matches the scale of the global need. #MentalHealth #GlobalHealth #WHA77 #HealthInvestment #CMHI #BrainPositiveEconomy

The theme for this year's World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th has been announced: Change the Narrative‼️ "Changing the narrative requires systemic change. It’s about shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. It means advocating for policies and legislation that prioritize mental health, increase access to care, and provide support for those in need. It means investing in research to better understand the complexities of suicide and develop evidence-based interventions."

So great to see that the World Health Organization is recognising mental health as a key part of addressing health determinants. There is not health without mental health!
