Your Privacy Rights

Tumblr takes the private nature of your information very seriously. We’ve put a lot of time, thought, and effort into building tools and documentation to help our products comply with privacy laws around the globe. We work hard to balance privacy and community, and we’re sure you can appreciate the challenges in that, and the seriousness with which we take those challenges.

In some places, users have legal rights to control what data we collect and how we use that data. This document describes some of those rights and provides information on how to exercise them. More information about what rights may apply to you, if not listed below, can be found in our Privacy Policy.

If you’re a resident of certain US states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and Virginia, you have a number of rights and choices about your personal information. To learn more, see the Supplemental Privacy Notice or more information below.

Submit A Privacy Request

Please reach out to Tumblr Support with our Privacy Request Form if you’re unsure about your privacy rights, how to manage your account and data, or would like to make a privacy request directly to us.

Additionally, you can reach us via email at .

Your legal rights are based on applicable laws in your jurisdiction. Inclusion of a right in this document is not a guarantee that this right applies to you, or that we will honor your rights request. If you would like to know what laws and rights might apply to you, we encourage you to seek the advice of a qualified attorney.

Right to Access

It won’t come as a surprise to you that we collect some of your information when you have an account with us. For example, as part of the account signup process we collect an email address and password from you in order to create your account.

You can read about all the information we collect, and learn more about how we use it and who, if anyone, we share it with in our Privacy Policy under “What We Collect”. In addition, if you’d like to know the specific personal data we have stored about you, you can request a download at any time within your Account Settings → Request Privacy Data here.

We have more information about how you can access and manage your data here.

Right to Delete

You’ll do great things on Tumblr, surely, but if it ever comes time to say goodbye, then you’re free to delete your account at any time and for any reason by following the directions here. The deletion will be effective immediately, for the most part, but it might take a little while to scrub everything from our archives and backups— but not for more than thirty days.

If you no longer have access to a Tumblr account you’d like to delete, reach out via our Account Recovery Form, and we’d be happy to help.

Right to Correct

In general you are able to correct any information about you that is wrong. For example, you can update your account email address and language from your Account Settings. Similarly, you can update your blog’s name, description, theme, and other information from Blog Appearance. And, obviously, you have full control over the content you publish or reblog on your blog.

If we are storing any information about you that you believe is inaccurate and you aren’t able to correct it yourself, please contact us to let us know how we can assist you.

Right to Portability

We hope you find our services and products useful, but if you are currently hosting your blog with Tumblr and have decided to move elsewhere, we provide you with the tools you need to move your blog to another service without any extra charges from us.

If you want to export the contents of more than one of your blogs, you’ll need to initiate this process separately for each blog.

Right to Opt Out, Object, or Consent

By default we collect information that helps us show you all this great content, improve our products, make marketing to you more relevant, personalize your Tumblr experience, and more. We also make it easy for you to opt out of receiving emailed updates about our news, products, and offers in your Notification Settings.

In order to provide you with all of this Tumblr content for free, Tumblr selectively runs advertisements. If you are a Tumblr user in the EU, UK, or in some US states you can customize your advertising preferences from within your Privacy Settings.

More information about options for hiding, reporting, and controlling the ads you see on Tumblr can be found in our Tumblr Ads & You documentation.

Right to Appeal

In rare circumstances, we may need to deny a user who contacts us to exercise one of their rights. For example, if we are unable to verify your ownership of an account we will deny your request to access your personal data. We take our responsibility to only turn your private information over to you (and not to others maliciously pretending to be you) very seriously. As another example, if we are legally obligated to maintain a copy of some of your information, then we will deny your request to delete your personal data.

In the event that we deny your request, we will communicate this fact to you in writing. You may appeal our decision by responding in writing to our denial email and stating that you would like to appeal. All appeals will be reviewed by an internal expert who was not involved in your original request. In the event that your appeal is also denied this information will be communicated to you in writing.

In some US states, specifically in Colorado, Connecticut, and Virginia, you may refer a denied appeal to the state attorney general if you believe the denial is in conflict with your legal rights. Here is where you can directly reach out:
