when I was a kid like we’re talking 10 years old I roleplayed Vampires on Neopets all the time & I’ve said before what a great forum Neopets was for roleplaying as a kid bc the site was fairly moderated but not so strict as to be no fun (at the time) so kids and adults could roleplay together in a way that was comfortable for both & I learned a lot about writing from my older partners & the forums were fast-paced & roleplays only lasted the night so you could just recycle characters and plots again and again and again or make up new ones on the fly
and bc I was ten but I wanted to roleplay an adult, I was usually playing & writing as a 19 year old girl bc that’s about as old as I could comprehend being at the time & no one else really roleplayed anyone much older than that except for the vampires who were of course like 500, but they looked 19-25
until one day someone came in they were like 28 irl playing a 40 year old man and I was like hold up. That’s an option??? Everyone shut up for a minute I need to put this man in a terrarium and study him.
I became obsessed with the character and I was SO excired whenever the roleplayer showed up on Friday nights and then one day I was like enough children’s silly games (<- guy who is in fourth grade) I need to get in on this.
So I made this 35 year old man up who was an absolute mess & I whittled at him for years until he was my magnum opus to the point that when I was 13, older roleplayers often thought I was an adult.
that said in my 20s I looked back and laughed at a key feature about him I thought was maybe unrealistic which was that he survived almost solely (by choice) on campbells instant microwave soup cups. it was ruining his health. his vampire friends were like for the love of god dude I am BEGGING you to eat a single fruit. but he wouldn’t.
but now that I’m 30 I’m like yeah. I know like eight guys like that. I think we’d get along.
When Veilguard comes out, please keep it in the back of your mind every single time you interact with Varric and Lucanis that their writer got laid off with little to no warning and that she is and always will be a Dragon Age legend and one of the reasons why the franchise has stayed afloat for as long as it has
