AI DISTURBANCE "OVERLAYS" DO NOT WORK!

To all the artists and folks who want to protect their art against AI mimicry: all the "AI disturbance" overlays that are circulating online lately DON'T WORK!

Glaze's disturbance (and now the Ibis Paint premium feature, apparently. Not sure.) modifies the image on a code-level, it's not just an overlayed effect but it actually affects the image's data so AI can't really detect and interpret the code within the image. From the Glaze website:

Can't you just apply some filter, compression, blurring, or add some noise to the image to destroy image cloaks?
As counterintuitive as this may be, the high level answer is that no simple tools work to destroy the perturbation of these image cloaks. To make sense of this, it helps to first understand that cloaking does not use high-intensity pixels, or rely on bright patterns to distort the image. It is a precisely computed combination of a number of pixels that do not easily stand out to the human eye, but can produce distortion in the AI's “eye.” In our work, we have performed extensive tests showing how robust cloaking is to things like image compression and distortion/noise/masking injection.

Another way to think about this is that the cloak is not some brittle watermark that is either seen or not seen. It is a transformation of the image in a dimension that humans do not perceive, but very much in the dimensions that the deep learning model perceive these images. So transformations that rotate, blur, change resolution, crop, etc, do not affect the cloak, just like the same way those operations would not change your perception of what makes a Van Gogh painting "Van Gogh."

for me the exception is when i make an ai of my OC whenever they say something they 'would not fucking say' I just know I have more work to do and I feel like I accomplished something when I successfully trained it to consider very niche specific things that i couldn't just look up but yeah if it's an existing character I would absolutely HATE how surface-level it was (and also not adhering to my specific hc and fanon) put putting your two OC's ai together is just like bonking two barbies together and giggling at how stupid the chaos is I also would never just use that output as my own i think (since ai is about to become a huge part of our lives whether we like it or not) it would be a good idea to at least have a basic understanding of how ai-training works - and the best way I find is to simply play around with it yourself (safely in a vacuum)

ai chatgpt honestly the best way to learn about the limitations with ai is to play around with it for yourself it can be a great tool - but not for the tasks the average person expects it to what ai is good at: helping you find stuff that google can't - help reformat a lot of data/text - help with coding etc. what ai is NOT good at: creative or critical writing and handling of factual information (like anything required in written homework) ThioJoe recently made a video about practical everyday uses of chatGPT that people might not know stuff like wtf does this error code mean in plain english? or reformatting this body of text into a readable unified table... or reverse dictionary... or helping to find a specific product (without Google reccomending sponsored ads in all the search entries) or finding that one episode of a tv show where a thing happens but you forgot the name and the characters involved

Poor people stay poor because other artists have allowed the industry to degrade to a level that people drastically undervalue art. In graphic arts, an independent artist typically makes below minimum wage. So many people take advantage of starting out and struggling artists, that they offer “exposure” as compensation. Or a hideously low rate. I have had people offer to pay me just $5/page for color work. And they saw nothing wrong with this offer. This is for something that I typically spend 4-6 hours per page on. And there are artists out there so desperate for ANY money, they will accept those offers. And thus perpetuate the idea that this is okay.

No, poor people aren’t poor because they take art degrees. They’re poor because there are entitled assholes who take advantage of them so they can turn a bigger profit.

Art is everywhere. Try to imagine a world without it. Without graphics. Without font design. Without logos. Everything done in the same, bland typefaces, with no images and no sense of color. Artists are more than people who sit and make pretty pictures. They are what gives companies an image, an identity. So why are they treated like the lowest possible rank?

Thank you. I am so sick of people trying to take advantage of me as an artist and use manipulative bullshit to get rates they want. Two rules to live by, fellow artists: 1) Never accept a job that involves the client getting your hard work and you getting only ‘exposure’. (I learned this the hard way. Seems to be a rite of passage for many, if not all artists.) Accept only cash as payment, according to your rates. Which leads to… 2) Never accept a job in which the client doesn’t bother to ask you for your rates and pushes their own amount of payment onto you. When they do this, they don’t respect you, and they sure as hell won’t think twice about milking you for everything you’ve got should you accept such a deal.
