GOOD NEWS: Alabama’s new congressional map now includes two Black-opportunity districts.
Previously, Alabama’s congressional map was struck down for violating the Voting Rights Act diluting the voting power of Black Alabamians. Despite Black Alabamians making up 27% of the state’s population, only one of the state’s seven congressional seats regularly went to a candidate preferred by Black voters.
The Biden administration has vowed to take “swift action” to support diversity in higher education in the face of the Supreme Court’s ruling gutting affirmative action, laying out a series of steps it will take through the Department of Education and other relevant agencies.

𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 🚨 Today the Supreme Court allowed the Louisiana congressional map to be redrawn to add another majority-Black district.
This decision a win for our democracy and Black voters in Louisiana, who were facing a congressional map that diluted their power and forced them into one district.
Today’s ruling comes on the heels of Allen v. Milligan, in which SCOTUS upheld Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and ordered Alabama officials to redraw the state’s congressional map to allow an additional Black majority district.
