BGV looks like a great organization. One question I have, is will you just be getting black girls to vote within the current system, or also educating them about the (often better) voting systems of other countries, like Proportional Representation in New Zealand, mandatory run-offs in France, and Ranked Choice Voting in Australia? I think it's important to constantly strive for more representative structures of government to keep oligarchy at bay. I wish you and your group much success.

In addition to our registration efforts, Black Girls Vote strives to cultivate an informed voting bloc. As a part of our education efforts, including civics education in elementary, middle and high schools, we provide an overview of America’s current election system, including the hard-won right to vote by women and African Americans. However, we also expose those we reach to alternatives abroad including Ranked Choice Voting.

It is also noted that Americans live and vote from all over the globe as absentee participants in the  process. Absentee vote count sacan sometime determine outcome of election. We welcome new and innovative concepts that will mirror our program model in different languages and diverse cultures.

Chapter agreement application is being updated and will be available online for download to complete and submission with required attachments by March 15th. We recommend you have a preliminary discussion with your Student Affairs department to adhere required protocol, procedure and internal paperwork for adding BGV chapter to the University family.

I launched BGV after a series of events that happened in my life. 1st the riots in Baltimore which were in walking distance of my home, 2nd I got fired from my govt appointed job because a new administration and 3rd A young man was murdered in the park across the street from me. All three involved  policy in someway and I knew it was time. To be completely honest  I sat in the idea for months before I shared it. . I was nervous and scared, but I leaped and we launched on Shirley Chisholm’s Birthday, November 30,2015.

Black Girls Vote recognizes the power and dynamic energy and experience of our college students! We are excited to launch our first official Collegiate Chapter of Black Girls Vote on the campus of Morgan State University this semester, Spring 2018!

We currently have a Collegiate Ambassador program which allows students to engage their student body while bringing BGV’s mission, vision and values to their campus. The program is currently comprised of 50 Ambassadors in the Greater Baltimore and Washington, DC area.

Getting Involved in Baltimore:

  • We also encourage you to join Team BGV at our next general body meeting on March 3rd from 10-12pm at Baltimore City Community College Tranquility Lounge (2901 Liberty Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215). Can’t make the March meeting? We meet the first Saturday of every month.

What is the most difficult challenge you had to encounter while pursuing this programme? Much love and support to you, you're doing an awesome job!! :)

One of the largest challenges we face in our outreach, education, registration and mobilization efforts is voter apathy and disengagement. There are far too many who feel that their vote just doesn’t matter. However, we work to remind them that their vote is their voice. Who we elect to represent us at the local, state and national level matters. Team BGV encourages everyone to get involved with the political process.

We’re so excited to host an Answer Time with a couple amazing women behind the organization, Black Girls Vote. BGV is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization that aims to engage, educate and empower young women of color. They’re taking your questions now, and will answer them on Wednesday, 3 p.m. EST.

From conducting civics education classes at high schools to hosting community forums for voters to interact with elected officials, BGV has worked on cultivating a community of well-informed people. They’ve hosted registration pop-ups everywhere from college campuses, sporting events, hair salons, and night clubs, ultimately registering more than 12,000 voters.

One of their most exciting accomplishments is their Collegiate Ambassador Program, which allows college students to engage their student body while bringing BGV’s mission to their campus. BGV currently has 50 ambassadors operating at college campuses in Maryland, DC and Virginia.

Here to answer your questions will be:

Nykidra “Nyki” Robinson, the visionary founder of Black Girls Vote. Robinson founded BGV in response to the ongoing issues in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. She realized that women, specifically Black women, needed to leverage their voting power to secure policy and ensure improved access to more opportunities and resources.

Natasha Murphy, the Deputy Director of Advocacy for Black Girls Vote. Murphy is responsible for policy research and analysis, legislative and regulatory tracking, and advocacy content development to inform and disseminate BGV’s policy positions. For her work with the organization, Natasha was featured in Essence Magazine’s #Woke100, an inaugural list of 100 women who are vigilant about changing our nation for the better.

It is a priority to welcome a multitude of cultures to cross barriers of racial blends in our colorful society. It’s essential to understand your voting rights and what to do if you are a first-time voter. Part of this is being aware of how voter suppression is currently affecting thousands of citizens who have the right to vote. The history of voter suppression in the United States is as old as the United States. 

To help spread understanding and prompt discussion, we paired with  Black Girls Vote (@blackgirlsvote) to help answer your questions. @blackgirlsvote is a nonprofit, grassroots organization focused on engaging, educating and empowering women of color to leverage their voting power to transform the democratic process. Nykidra “Nyki” Robinson is the founder and CEO of Black Girls Vote. Nyki’s life and work experience, combined with her interest in politics, was birthing ground for the delivery of her biggest project yet, Black Girls Vote, Inc. As the CEO, Nyki manages fundraising, numerous community and government initiatives, and events. Nyki graduated with a degree in business administration and a minor in leadership studies. 

Natasha Murphy is the Chief of Staff of Black Girls Vote. She assists the Founder and CEO with the organization’s strategic operations. Natasha earned her Master of Science in Public Health, a Health Policy degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences, magna cum laude from Howard University. 

Lauren Wyatt serves as Advocacy Lead for Black Girls Vote, Inc. By day, she is a corporate paralegal with a background in political science, legislative affairs, and compliance. Lauren holds a Bachelor of Art in Political Science from Delaware State University and is currently obtaining a dual Masters of Science in Negotiation and Conflict Management and Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore. 

Nia Duggins is part of the Black Girls Vote Advocacy Team. She is a policy expert, political strategist, and innovative thought leader with a broad range of experience working on many issues, including voting rights and election administration matters. Nia is a graduate of Bennett College and the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.
