Happy First Birthday to Figaro!

It’s been so much fun learning about Fig in his first year of life. He’s more mature in some ways, but in many others he’s the same goofy baby I brought home last year. Who knows what our future holds, but we’re enjoying every day to the fullest. He shows a lot of promise and, most importantly, is becoming a dog I love hanging out with.

Today we went to one of his favorite hiking spots and he had the most fun getting filthy and zooming around like crazy. Then Fig got to pick out some new toys at the store, got weighed (93lbs), and made several new friends. He didn’t want to let go of that octopus once he found it. One of the things he’s discovered this year is a love for apple pastries, so he got one of his own. Now he’s napping hard after such a big day.

An idiot robin has built a nest on top of our garage door motor. The nest was constructed so the chain that drives the door is actually a part of the nest, and if we open or close the garage door, the whole thing is going to get torn apart. So I guess the garage door is staying open for as long as it takes for these eggs to hatch and these birds to leave the nest.

My wife has set up a camera to continuously monitor the situation.

Wife: Maybe we should set up some padding beneath where they'll fall out of the nest? Normally they fall onto grass, not concrete. Me: Seems like we're really coddling these birds. Wife: Well, yeah. Me: I just don't want you to get invested. Wife: Way, way too late for that. I'm all in.

So we're keeping the garage door open for a few weeks, I guess. Whenever I go to use the car, the robin flies away from the nest and watches me cautiously to see whether I'm going to kill her babies, and I can't help but find that a little bit rude of her.

Chihuahuas can be some of the sweetest and cuddliest little fuckers you can imagine. If you've met a nasty one, consider that very likely it was not properly socialized or ever treated properly like a dog (many aren't and it's A Problem), and also that they're very small and you are very large, and that makes you potentially terrifying.

For reference, this is a map of terrorist attacks in Europe from 1970-2016. The attacks in Northern Ireland were mostly carried out by a mix of pro-English and pro-Irish extremists. Northern Ireland still, to this day, has a separate terror threat level to the national terrorism threat level, although for the past year this has been the same as the National level (which also applies to Northern Ireland)

And I don't think people on Tumblr who aren't either Irish or British fully understand that Northern Ireland isn't a simple political issue. There is no 'It should just be taken away from the UK and given to Ireland' solution. Quite frankly, nobody outside of Northern Ireland should have a say what country Northern Ireland is in, aside from obviously, if there's a vote then Ireland would also need to accept them in. But there's a lot of 'there's a clear good and bad side' simplification here, and there isn't. There almost never is a clear good and bad side when you're dealing with international politics.

I can tell you that for at least one very prominent Irish voice, it's because of the Good Friday Agreement, and that's Hozier.

Shortly after 10/7 I saw him in concert, and he chose to speak on the matter. He started by acknowledging Hamas was wrong ("we all saw the horror that occurred"), and then talked a bit about his family. Apparently, even though he was born near and raised in Dublin, his mom is actually from Northern Ireland. And his view is that we need a bilateral ceasefire and peaceful mediation, which he explicitly said he believed could be done because he lived through the tail end of the Troubles and saw it could happen.

Which, I mean. I appreciate the sentiment, but it feels very naive, because the Ingredient X here is that nobody involved in the Troubles wanted to have to fight. Like, the NRA existed, but even they weren't saying "it's the duty of every Irish person to go buy a knife and cut off the heads of the English." (Which is a localization of a real statement from the head of Hamas. And you'll notice he didn't fucking say "Zionists," he said "Jews" and "Jewish state.") The ultimate goal was peace, not annihilation.

I think many Irish need to remember this. The Troubles were fucking horrifying and complex and there was way more to them than anyone could fit in a Tumblr post. But there is one crucial factor that makes the entire comparison fail, and it's that Ireland hadn't been hijacked by a death cult that gleefully proclaimed it was fine if every last Irish person died as long as every English person did too.

Hi fun fact, colors do have meaning and there is a legit thing called color theory. Red does has more positive connotations than negative like the @mintymaiden said. Red is associated with more love, lust, passion than blood and death just like the chart shows you but If you want, here’s a link for you to check it out yourself.
