Started rereading the hunger games and in retrospect some of this is so funny with Peeta and Katniss’ relationship it’s like

Okay I feel like I need to elaborate because I have more thoughts.
With the hindsight of knowing what Katniss and Peeta’s relationship will be later on in the book/trilogy and knowing that Peeta’s intentions were good all along, this reaction is kind of funny because it juxtaposes what will come later.
HOWEVER, without that knowledge, which Katniss doesn’t have during the majority of the first book’s games, I completely understand where she is coming from. She admits even on the train that she’s starting to warm up to Peeta and she finds that concerning because she may be forced to kill him for her own survival. That’s why she throws out the cookies and tries to distance herself from Peeta because she doesn’t want to grow too attached and then struggle with winning the games, which she promised Prim she’d try to win, and Prim is “the only person [she’s] certain that [she] loves.”
It’s cute and fun to look back on this knowing that they get together later, but I can’t blame Katniss at all for pushing down her feelings and acting cold. She’s being thrown in a life-or-death game and she reasonably chooses playing it safe over succumbing to these feelings that could end up with her dead. She doesn’t know Peeta well enough at this point to trust him, and given the dire circumstances, why should she? He’s fully capable of lying at the drop of a hat, and she knows this at a certain point!
