Looks like it's bulging? Or really is bulging? Water expanding when frozen, it's not incomprehensible that it might.

Exactly. This is what happens when the water freezes at extremely low temperatures. When it's not quite so extreme, the ice is able to expand outwards and up the surrounding edges of the lake. When skating or walking on a lake on a cold day you'll often hear the ice crack loudly beneath your feet, then hear a "splash" as the ice dome falls back against the surface of the water. It can be quite a scary experience, but is actually a sign that the ice is thickening and becoming safer. That being said, there could also be a fish-eye lens at work here.

Source: I grew-up in Canada with a lake in our backyard. The "boom"ing sound of expanding ice is one of my favourite childhood memories.

As someone who has always lived in the south I can honestly say I think I would poop myself if that happened to me while walking on a frozen lake.

I recently spent 3 days ice fishing in Flaming Gorge, in north east Utah. It wasn't my first time ice fishing, but it was my first full days-long trip. The ice was about 18 inches thick, but it still scared the hell out of me when I'm trecking a mile across clear ice and seeing all the giant cracks. But eventually it became pretty cool sounding- it really is a beautiful sound once you get used to it, very calming to listen too.

The mild frostbite was also fun.

I love ice fishing. What did you catch?

I personally didn't pull up anything- we think it was just bad spots we hit. But it was for the Burbot Bash, a competition to try and catch as many Burbot as possible so they can find out where they breed and hit them where it hurts.

Did some googling; I'm sure you're right about the bulging. If you go here and scroll about halfway (or ctrl+f) to the "Ridges" section, it describes types of ice that can bulge up like this.

Fascinating picture! Anyone know where it was taken?

It is actually bulging, ice can do that.

I'm confused, is this just a fisheye camera lens?

u/theaggressivenapkin avatar

It looks like a combination of a fisheye lens and several other photos from a regular lens.

Edit: it's photo stitching with 2 different lenses so the end result is not a totally cohesive picture, giving the illusion that it is bulging.

Yeah that is actually bulging, its most likely a shallower section of the lake that is being held up by the ground underneath while the st drops away as the water level recedes over winter.

It also appears to be Kananaskis, Alberta, not %100 sure which lake though, Spray or one of the Upper or Lower Kananaskis Lakes.

u/Poop_is_Food avatar

so you're saying it basically turns into a glacier?

u/nugohs avatar

In the sense that its ice and sort of mobile: yes, in the sense that its around for more than just winter: no.

Where was the photo taken?

this is what happens when you use a fisheye lens!

Though I understand how ice bulging works, I imagine this would only look like it's bulging due to the distended boundary on the far side of the lake. I'm saying this mostly because it wouldn't be much of an illusion if the ice was actually bulging.

i'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was bulging.
