Let's be realistic about a season 2

Discussion

I don't see Scavengers Reign anywhere on the top charts. My hope now is for a 4 part mini series...

they’ll gut this while in the next room over throwing a pile of money at soulless reality tv dating show trashpile #74 😁

I didnt feel bad that scavanger reign wouldnt get a second season until i read this comment

Don’t you mean rebel moon 3/4 plus directors cuts?

That’s MAX, not Netflix, :-p

u/Cephalopod_Joe avatar

Netflix, home of Paradise PD and Farzar?

Edited

Netflix - Ultraman: rising, Arcane, Love Death & Robots, Blue Eyed Samurai, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Delicious Dungeon, VInland Saga, etc.

MAX - 9 different versions of 90 Day fiance, 1000lb sisters, owned by Discovery channel which was all trash TV, etc etc.

u/Cephalopod_Joe avatar

They certainly both ahve their good shows and bad shows. Ot was more about not putting Netflix on a pedestal than bashing Netflix. Hilda and Arcane are two of my favorite shows of all time

Ugh this was a real stab to my soul

there should be a way to support entertainment shows like this via GoFundMe. Netflix is a soulless bunch of cunts and can get fucked.

If they’d made it available in Europe and just anywhere outside of the US…

This bro, wtf! I was super hyped for a rewatch and to help with views but i can't see it in my country.

vpn!!

u/RendCycle avatar

I used a VPN set to Uk and I was able to watch the whole first season in Netflix in just about a day. It's truly a great series! Reminded me of Moebius' works in Heavy Metal magazine. "Double-liked" the series! :-)

100% this. It blows my mind that you can't watch it legally anywhere over here. Suck a colossal mistake.

I saw at max in brazil

u/minnesotawinter22 avatar

they haven't even artificially pushed it onto the charts like they have for some many other shows

Mm? Im watching it on Netflix in Ireland

It's available in Europe. I've been watching it over the last few weeks in Scotland and not used a VPN to do it. Not sure how I found it, stumbled across a recommendation or review online somewhere and searched for it to find it though.

It doesn't seem to be doing well enough to trouble the charts, I think unless someone very high up at Netflix loves it and champions it as a pet project it's doomed to be one and done which is a shame as it's beautifully made and genuinely original feeling.

More replies

Does it have to be on the top charts for it to get a sequel?

Not necessarily, but it would definitely help since Netflix is pretty beholden to contextless numbers.

u/hurst_ avatar

They haven't pushed this at all. I only heard about it from the reddit algorithm

yes. Netflix doesn't really invest into anything unless it gets crazy good ratings. check pretty much every amazing show they've produced then cancelled randomly

They invest in more shows than all the streamers combined probably...

u/SomeDudeYeah27 avatar

That’s true, but their approach is pretty spray and pray, and I’ve been suspecting for a long time that they’re treating commission works as basically huge ads

Hoping non-subscribers would notice and raise the subscription numbers

Or some other secret internal metric no one knows about. Not even contracted showrunners

This is my suspicion since it’s apparent that regardless of the breadth/quantity of projects commissioned, rarely do they get subsequent seasons green lit

Blue eye samurai was in the top ten for a while and there still were doubts

No there weren't

1899 is a series by the makers of the popular Dark, and Netflix canceled it.

Netflix is like the planet Vesta. And Scavengers Reign just crash landed on it. Let's see what happens.

I was annoyed about 1899 for sure.

I was super annoyed about 1899 too... It had a rather confusing start, but by the end I was hooked.

I felt similarly about Archive 81 as well!

Never watched 1899 but Dark is literally one of the best shows I've ever seen

Edited

1899 is still good to watch. It was actually a pretty expensive show that used this thing in special effects called The Volume. It is like a circular room where the circular wall is actually a screen, and you build a set in the center of the room and use the volume wall as all the backgrounds/landscapes. It makes it so what you think would be achieved with green screen, without the green screen, and makes it look much better than green screen.

Green screen still better for action stuff, but the Volume is the thing to use now for when the shot you want is a scene with a background and limited camera movements.

1899 is also a great series! Another show with substance that Netflix cancelled. Something's wrong with the company I guess...

u/LuxuryBallVolibear avatar

OH IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE THAT 1899 WAS FROM THE SAME FOLKS AS DARK. I enjoyed 1899, but Dark will live on in my memory for the rest of my life.

They had to promote the shit out of The Sandman to get it to the numbers they needed for a second season. We're not getting shit.

SR is a much, much cheaper show to make than sandman. It's not exclusively about doing giant numbers provided the ROI is good. I don't think it's very likely SR gets a second season personally but it does have far more flexibility with the level of popularity it needs to be profitable than any of their live action originals.

I'd settle for a graphic novel at this point.

Honestly if it didn't happen over at HBO, I don't want it happening over at Netflix because I don't trust them with not meddling with it.

Netflix has done some awesome animated shows though.

u/TheLiberalLover avatar

And cancels them. See inside job.

I did see on another subreddit that one of the executives that green lit it at HBO now works for Netflix. No other detail’s unfortunately that was all I remember about the post.

It’s such a great show. And you appreciate it a lot more once it’s over. I love how they didn’t explain stuff. Let the viewer read between the lines.

I think some minor adjustments to first two episodes would draw a larger interest in the show. Just give them some context to stick around. But idk.

Tbh, I think the first 5 minutes don't do the show many favors. The animation quality was like 3 frames per second.

More replies

It’s not just about being in the top ten. More goes into the decision to green light more seasons of a show in Netflix. It’s also how it’s watched.

One thing is whether or not the viewer finishes the show. How many episodes in one go does a watcher do?

There are shows out there that enter into the top ten but everyone is basically watching the first two episodes then giving up.

u/LazerShark1313 avatar

I don’t have high hopes for a season 2. It’s too good. It’s in no way pandering to the Rebel Moon crowd.

Are the showrunners looking for a season 2? When I watched it, I guess I just assumed it was all tidied up. I’d love to see more from the same team but this first story seems like it accomplished what it wanted to!

They were hoping HBO would pick them up for S2. Saw a short video where they talked about it. They said they still have so many ideas to try.

That’s exciting, glad to hear it!

It's currently on Netflix on the UK and I know of several friends that have watched it since it came over. So I remain hopeful!

I think the creators who are obviously passionate about this concept that we'll get some sort of follow up even If it's not a traditional second season...I hope? Fingers crossed 🤞

The problem is that even though Netflix picked it up, they didn't really advertise it.

I remember when i first found it on Max, I just felt like I got lucky enough to find it. Hell, I didn't even know it was leaving Max, and Netflix picked it up until I saw a random article about it.

I feel like if it got even a little bit of marketing for it, it could have easily been on the Top 10 of most watched shows, but unfortunatley I feel like the biggest advertising it's getting is word of mouth by us the fans.

Either way, I would LOVE a second season, but thankfully, I feel like Season 1 ended on a decent spot. But I would never say no to more Scavengers Reign content

u/Advanced-Sample-1992 avatar

the show most definitely deserves a second season ? I mean rotten tomatoes gave it a 100% rating… even though that rating probably means nothing to Netflix it still deserves more

u/Underdog424 avatar
Edited

I lost most faith in a 2nd season because of how poorly HBO/Max handled this show. It was one of the only new Max shows with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. But they didn't promote or care about it. These mega-corporations are so poorly mismanaged in terms of creativity.

Titmouse helped put this show out. As a company, they have had lots of success on Adult Swim. Scavengers Reign should have premiered there instead of Max. Its where the original short was released too. I think it would have gotten the praise it deserves.

At this point, the most we could ask for is crowdfunding a few more shorts on YouTube.

Sheeple, the majority of people, have shit taste and square minds - amazing shows like SR always fly under the radar and never get the attention they deserve. It’s a shame but we were lucky to have such an amazing first season made that will surely become a cult classic. I haven’t given up hope but I won’t be holding my breath for any follow-up.

What's crazy is that it did get crazy good numbers while on Max, so bit of a conundrum. Hope people yelling online's enough. People are passionate and would probably cook.

Where did you hear that viewership was great? I've seen nothing but people say it was in the top 10 on Max which really doesn't mean anything

u/Jsmooth123456 avatar

"Crazy good numbers" is a frankly insane hyperbole

Probably bit hyperbolic, but I recall it at least made the top 10 most viewed while airing and bit after while on Max, and was top 1 in somewhere else. I didn't see it reach the top 10 while on Netflix.

With Zaslev at the helm? Hell, no. But, I can see Netflix picking it up.

u/MothraIsMyHero avatar

I would settle for a 45min-1 hour special episode

Netflix kills very good, well-produced shows all the time. That's their thing. They always let me down.

for me personally, season 2 is not enough ! i want a new genre of animated films and series to be inspired by this masterpiece. and i’m not talking about the art or sci-fi concepts only, it’s the ability to make you feel things without many words or complicated sci-fi concepts. it was so fluid and natural, it basically spoke to my soul. how can i call this “sci-fi” when that’s just a little part of what it really is. it’s connecting the artificial world we live in with the natural state of natural things

u/3KidsInaTrench-Coat avatar

It's completely insane that quality doesn't matter at all just viewership. But if Netflix would advertise it or pop it up in peoples feed and got them to try it, most people would enjoy it I think. It's a shame, to me this show was so original and beautiful. It was like a darker survival version of Nausica but did even more to show the intricacies and wonder of alien life.

I just found this show, it was suggested by Netflix. Went in blind and holy fuck it’s amazing. Some of the best sci fi in years, live action or animation

u/Roddenbrony avatar

Does it even need a second season??

Yeah! I need to know more about those tech priest guys in their cool looking spaceship!

u/Roddenbrony avatar

I would like to know, but I don’t need to know to enjoy what’s already been created.

You put a tech priest in your show and I'm with you until the bitter end lol

u/RendCycle avatar

They're probably a Space Cult worshipping the "heart-parasite" alien which looks like a buddy of Cthulhu that got Sam. :-P

u/Popular-Weird-8237 avatar

Not necessarily… but could a second season be amazing and teach more about Vesta?

u/Roddenbrony avatar

It could be, but it isn’t necessary.

u/Popular-Weird-8237 avatar

It sounds like the creators are passionate about making another and have ideas they are excited about. That’s enough for me to want to see what that looks like.

u/Roddenbrony avatar

Just sayin’, it’s a masterpiece as is, more isn’t always necessary. If the creators themselves are passionate about more, that’s great, but I’m happy and thankful with what we’ve been given us.

It would help of netflix weren't doing negative 0 to promote the shit , word of mouth is goof but it's still a weird show for weirdos. It needs a push.

Season 1 was very good. Leave it there. Let's not make this into another Westworld.

u/ItsMorthosBaby avatar

This is the concern I have, and I'm definitely divided on whether or not I think another season should happen. Maybe if they focused exclusively on the tech priest part and left the majority of the original story as concluded? Idk

u/Underdog424 avatar

The main reason I want a 2nd season is they said they have all the plot points written out and are ready to start it. I trust them. I think they did such an amazing job in the first round.

u/SamuraiUX avatar

It’s sort of a weird niche show, tbh. I liked but would not die on a hill for it. Probably not enough bonkers-mindbendy sci-fi anime fans specifically to drive the numbers. Me, I want Zom100 s2, it’s more my fare.

I will say I haven’t cared about a ‘droid so much since R2D2 tho

u/Underdog424 avatar

This show had really good ratings almost everywhere. I'm on a few forums and it gets lots of praise from random people.

u/SamuraiUX avatar

I’m sure it did. But you need to understand demographics. This show is not aimed at children or sports fans or people who hate cartoons. It’s aimed at: people who will watch animation; people who specifically like sci-fi; people who enjoy drama and serious themes.

I’m not sure of the age and gender that implies specifically, but this show isn’t for “everyone.”

u/igottapoopbad avatar

Same demographic of people who like black mirror and love death and robots; both of which are immensely popular.

After watching the show I was just so satisfied with the ending that I thought it was written with the intent of being its own self-contained story.

Yeah there's a few things left not tied up yet. But that's life. Nothing is ever fully tied up.

To me it was a show about transformation and everyone at the end who has survived is transformed and still in the process of transforming... Or they're Kris, who refused to transform from a ruthless person who never helps anyone and abandons everyone, who is then dying at the end alone and begging for help as her just dessert and moral lesson as to the value of helping.

It just felt to me like a complete and satisfying story as it is. I'm sure a second season would be great but I'm not convinced the story really needs one.
