Elon Musk Unveils Tesla's Cybertruck (and ATV)

It looks like a vehicle from the set of Mad Max, but while the doors look to be indestructible, its windows certainly aren't.

Last night, Elon Musk unveiled Tesla's Cybertruck, and it's certainly unlike any truck we've seen before.

Tesla describes it as "better utility than a truck with more performance than a sports car." If the official spec numbers are to be believed, then that statement is most certainly true.

While it looks quite unusual (beautiful or ugly depending on your preferences), the Cybertruck exterior is manufactured from ultra-hard 30x cold-rolled monochrome stainless steel. No dents, no damage, and no corrosion are promised as a result.

The windows are also meant to be ultra-strong, but the on-stage demonstration proved otherwise when a metal ball was thrown and smashed them, although not all the way through.

Under its metal exterior, Tesla is set to offer three models with a single motor rear-wheel-drive, dual motor all-wheel-drive, and tri-motor all-wheel-drive. The range extends from 250 miles to 500 miles depending on the configuration, and 0-60mph can be achieved in less than 2.9 seconds if you have the tri-motor model.

An adaptive air suspension offering up to 16 inches of ground clearance ensures you won't ever get stuck, and the Cybertruck can cope with an approach angle of 35 degrees and departure angle of 28 degrees. On-board there's 100 cubic feet of storage and it's possible to tow between 7,500 and 14,000 pounds of weight.

Orders are already open for the Cybertruck, which costs just $39,900 for the single motor model. The dual motor is $49,900, and the tri-motor is $69,900. Adding the self-driving option increases the price by $7,000.

Securing your Cybertruck only requires a $100 deposit which is fully refundable, but you'll be waiting quite a while to take delivery. Production isn't expected to start until late 2021 when Tesla will allow customers to "complete your configuration." If you want the tri-motor model then production begins in late 2022.

As well as unveiling the Cybertruck, Elon Musk had a surprise at the end of his on-stage presentation. Tesla has also been quietly working on an electric ATV, which was brought out on stage, loaded on to the back of the Cybertruck, and then plugged in so it could charge.
