Register HERE for LGBT Humanists at Pride in London 2024 - LGBT Summer Fair - Lead me into temptation, please!Conway Hall, London
Book your place here: Lead me into temptation, please
Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, our Humanist Heritage project will be hosting a special all-day event to mark the anniversary of LGBT Humanists – and you’re invited.
Taking place at Conway Hall in London on 13 July, the LGBT Summer Fair will include talks, performances, workshops, art commissions, and special findings from deep in our archives. It will be a major showcase of our heritage in celebration of our 45th anniversary year.
Join us as we honour, rejoice, and reflect on a history of humanist activism that has made our society kinder, more tolerant, and rational.
Join us for a summery day of performances, workshops, talks, market stalls, an exhibition, and more! We will be celebrating our 45th anniversary with a fair named in homage to our bestselling T-shirts from the 1990s. The historic spaces of Conway Hall will be transformed into an LGBT festival, inspired by the annual fairs we hosted here in the 1980s. We’ll have radical booksellers like Housmans, art and craft stalls, fair-style games, refreshments, and more!
During the day, activities will include:
- Screen printing workshop with River Manning, where you’ll make your own printed T-shirt featuring the ‘Lead Me Into Temptation, Please’ slogan
- Poetry workshop with LGBT Humanists’ Alexander Williams
- Writing workshop themed on LGBT humanists from centuries past, run by the incredible Tomara Garrod
- Zine workshop with Beth Watson, host of Queer Diary, themed around LGBT teenage nostalgia
- Film screening of Saintmaking, a documentary about the canonisation of Derek Jarman by queer 'nuns'
In the evening, we turn the Main Hall into a performance space, featuring artists including:
- Black Peppa, third place winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 4
- David Hoyle, cabaret star who skilfully imbues searing social commentary into his blend of performance and visual art. David was the first English ‘saint’ to be ‘canonised’ by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence since the ceremony in 1991 for LGBT Humanists’ Derek Jarman. David has often spoken out against intolerance in religious contexts, including reflecting on his Anglican upbringing in Blackpool
- Theophina Gabriel, poet and founder of Onyx magazine, who will be presenting new work prompted by his research into LGBT Humanists’ newsletters from the 1980s and 1990s
- Orlando, performer and cultural historian from the University of Oxford, whose research-led LGBT work has been featured in major institutions like the National Gallery, Tate, and the V&A
- London Humanist Choir, who will be singing a Pride-themed repertoire of music from LGBT artists , from Queen to Elton John
I really hope you can join us for what promises to be an amazing day! This has been made possible thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which is helping to shine a national spotlight on the achievements of Humanists UK and our members in driving positive social change.
More activities and performers relating to these events will be announced in the coming weeks. All these workshops and performances are included in your £3 ticket! During the day, there will also be free access to the Picturing Nonconformity exhibition.
For nearly half a century we've been activists on the front line, fighting for LGBT rights on the basis of compassion, reason, and human rights. Join us in July at Conway Hall as we bring that story to life!
We look forward to seeing you.
