Project Sylva
Software Development
Fostering the development of an open source, production grade telco cloud stack.
About us
A Linux Foundation Europe open source project, Sylva was born out of a desire to reduce complexity and accelerate cloudification of the network within the EU’s privacy, security, and energy efficiency requirements. Project Sylva will build on top of existing open source projects to provide implementations and extensions. Despite the specific European needs, the Sylva project has broader ambitions, and should be seen as a global player within the Telco Cloud ecosystem, as it’s open to collaborators outside the European Union as well.

🎯 Relevant article from #Lightreading that explain the role of #Sylva to deliver a telco Cloud to host multi Network Functions. Having a community (#LFEU) solution is easier to onboard major NF Vendors on a trusted #TelcoCloud. Iain Morris interviewed Laurent Leboucher that also detail in the opening that to adress other use cases such as #API for Devs, Data Analytics or #AI the hyperscaler offer a very services catalog. https://lnkd.in/e3CdrNEE

#EUCS is a relevant tool to get an homegenous regulation on cloud across Europe for Important and Essential Entities. A dedicated Workgroup of #Sylva is translating the EUCS rules into technical requirements. I will not comment the sovereignty requirements importance in EUCS as it is the essence of this 2 pager.
We OVHcloud with A1, Airbus Aircraft, Aruba, Capgemini, Dassault Systèmes, Deutsche Telekom, EDF, Exoscale, Gigas, IONOS SE, OpenNebula Systems, Orange, OVHcloud, Proximus, Eutelsat Group, Sopra Steria, @StackIT, Telecom Italia Mobile have signed a common statement to ask for including reference to sovereignty provisions in the EU cybersecurity certification scheme on cloud services (EUCS). We believe the inclusion of sovereignty requirements is necessary to overcome market fragmentation, protect European organizations most sensitive data, and encourage the development of sovereign cloud solutions in Europe. Removing any reference to sovereignty provisions from the main scheme clearly fail to meet these objectives. This would not only contradict what has been proposed in the previous EUCS schemes for over two years, but also give up the collective efforts undertaken by ENISA, the European Commissionand Member States’ representatives. The EU must not abandon its overall objective of fostering digitalsovereignty, a goal that is all the more relevant in a context of geopolitical uncertainty. https://lnkd.in/ee4u7wr8 #uecs #ovhcloud #cloud

Thank you Annie Turner for having me today for Mobile Europe #Telco to #Techco conference. In our fireside chat "Plotting the return to growth", we had the opportunity to explore lots of paths where #technology was clear enabler, and I meant Tech outside the telco world. If #3GPP spec will rule how a specific network service have to work, it's all the wrapping and the life cycle around that is going to change, based on #intent-based and #automated #infrastructures, #deployment strategies and #operation opening doors for new #innovations and more #optimized #operating model. An opportunity, to put the spot on NGMN Alliance #CloudNative #Manifesto (https://lnkd.in/e-_YVbEU) and the The Linux Foundation Networking CNTi requirements #whitepaper (https://lnkd.in/eAZAvS-r) written between peers. Other technologies are also big factors for opportunities for growth, and we dig into #API, #CloudNative and #GenerativeAI. On the API side, leveraging value from underlay and overlay networks is crucial for differentiating services, especially when #owning the #network. The industry has focused on the CAMARA Project, an #opensource project at the The Linux Foundation, to define new network APIs for #retrieving information from and #configuring the network. Initially focused on mobile connectivity, given initial focus given by CAMARA with the support of #OpenGateway GSMA, the approach is expected to evolve to support both #fixed and #mobile networks. Orange supports a coherent #standardization approach for end-to-end connectivity capabilities and believes that enterprise contributions to the open-source project will help #prioritize impactful APIs for #dev communities. At MWC 2024, use cases were showcased for #identity leveraging Number Verification and Sim swap, #location verification with device location, and #geofencing for device notifications. These APIs are expected to be used in both public and private networks. On Cloud Native, we mainly talked about the shift to more horizontal models and the potential for better automation, like with TM Forum's autonomous network transformation. I recall our #industrial strategy with our Telco Cloud Factory, which delivers the Orange Telco Cloud based on the Linux Foundation Europe Project Sylva, our Network Integration Factory for standardised deployment, and our unified #operations under the transformation of #NRE. Finally, regarding #GenAI, we only scratched the surface as time was running out, just the opportunity to focus our interest on #Ops (RCA, Ticket Management, Close-Loop Reconciliation) and talk to the network via #prompts. Kudos to the team in background, and in particular Tiffany Amorós Spooner, a real fairy who works miracles in preparation. Thanks for having me at FutureNet World on this panel "Accelerating the journey to Cloud Native and 5G monetisation" hosted by Caroline Chappell with Suzana Grujev Pål Grønsund and Ignacio Gonzalez. I really appreciated this panel as it was held in the #Business track and covered #CloudNative, which has been my main topic for a few years now. It was the opportunity to remind how much the Cloud Native journey is both #strategic and #critical for us at Orange. As a multi-country telecom operator, we are in the process of transforming to a #horizontal #model to leverage operational #efficiency, #skills mobility and raise the bar in #automation and delivery of our network services. For us, at #infrastructure level, the horizontal model is a cloud native one. To fuel our strategy, we are a founding member of the Linux Foundation Europe's Project Sylva, which is the cornerstone of our Orange Telco Cloud #OTC strategy, offering multiple deployment options from a single industrialised platform. But infrastructure is only one piece of the puzzle, we won't be cloud native without covering the #deployment strategy with our Network Integration Factory #NIF and the appropriate operational model. And above all, we need true cloud native network capabilities from our partners. To accelerate this journey, we also decided to strongly support the pivot of our industry by participating in ecosystems like NGMN Alliance or The Linux Foundation #Networking (Anita Döhler and Arpit Joshipura were in the audience). On the #5G monetisation part, during our discussion we talked about slicing, the potential of API, MPN and connecting edge to BtoB or even BtoBtoX, which we see all these more as an incremental roll over transformation. It was the opportunity to bring 3 thoughts: 1. I truly believe that the 5G #killerApp or service is not yet here nor invented to cover the level of investment of our industry, 2. The network #APIs are an opportunity to leverage our telco assets to address direct or indirect through aggregators, but the size of the cake is uncertain, just remember that the connectivity leader of the market, Twillio, is a $4+ B revenue company. 3. Most importantly, our main challenge is to make the #invisible, #Connectivity, #visible and valuable again (we have a problem with "underlay" naming, not visible is not "valuable"). In all this story, Cloud Native is the right technical bearer, bringing 4 super powers (resilience, self-healing, closed loop reconciliation and drift management) if it's used in conjunction with the right operating model, #GitOps. I'm more concerned about how our industry will transform to have new business value pockets than our ability to go Cloud Native, even if we need to unite as telco peers to support the move of the whole ecosystem...and personally, it is what makes me wake up every morning 🚀 Bruno Zerbib Laurent Leboucher Stéphane Demartis Houmed IBRAHIM Bernard Despres Otilia Anton Gilles Bourdon Nicolas Freville Nicole Clarke
