Never take a "meh" job
While I was interviewing for positions in Seattle this summer, I included my 11-year-old daughter in some of the decision-making process (we have to get kids ready to run the world by exposing them to real-life scenarios!). We made PRO/CON lists for a few positions that I was considering, and one of them in particular made a lot of sense on paper. However - I could not seem to get excited about it no matter how hard I tried. So my daughter wrote "meh" in the CON column. She then asked me, "Mom, why would you take a job that you don't even really want to do?". I really stepped back... out of my head, out of my lists of requirements, and back into my heart. She was totally right, and I'm so glad I just accepted an opportunity with a team that from the get-go has me chomping at the bit to come in to work every day and be inspired by brilliant minds around me. So here's my best piece of advice (that I needed to be reminded of, too!) - if at all possible, avoid considering positions that you feel "meh" about. If it doesn't excite you, interest you, scare you a little, and ignite your curiosity, then you probably won't be very successful at it. And life is so short, isn't it?
