Now THAT'S confusing. I saw a job description for a New York-headquartered company that was listed as "District of Columbia, USA, Remote" and included the sentence "This is a remote position." So I started filling out the application and encountered this question: "Are you willing to commute to our NYC office? * "[COMPANY] has a hybrid and flexible work policy. Employees are in-office 3 days per week." I assume that one of two things happened: 1. Most of company's positions are hybrid NYC, but this one isn't and the company failed to modify its application software to remove the "commute" question. 2. All of the company's positions are hybrid NYC, but they included "remote" language to get more candidates to apply. I guessed that #1 was the case, answered "No" to the question, assumed that this was NOT a knockout question for this position, and applied. I'd confirm this with the company, but the email acknowledging my application came from a "no-reply" address. #jobhunt

Ok, I know I am going to open up a huge can of worms with what I am about to say, but I want to know what you think. In my last post, I mentioned we have a remote role, but that it required that applicants live in NY state. (It's a government job so that's the client's requirement, in case of emergencies and you have to come in. Emergencies are such things as a power outage at your home, or something like that - not a regular occurance). One person stated that the NY requirement means it's not remote. I've seen many roles posted that are remote, but require applicants live in certain cities/states/time zones/countries, and never thought that diminished the remote aspect. My definition of remote means working from home. So, my question is, what defines a remote role in your eyes? #remotework #locationrequirements #workfromhome

I think the term “remote” has shifted over time. I’d say if you’re ever required- even once, to go into the office, it’s “hybrid”. But isn’t that a better sell? “This is a hybrid role, however, you only have to come into the office when it’s an emergency.” I think that sounds better than “this is a remote role but you have to come in once in a blue one”. It feels a little bait and switch. Same thing, gets you the same applicants (if not more applicable candidates because they have to be in the state) AND it’s sold in a way where the expectations of the applicant are met with a hybrid role, with the added benefits of rarely having to be in the office. Win-win in my opinion.

And that’s an extra cost that they may not want to take on. Some states make this easy and inexpensive and others are crazy high like California! At the end of the day it comes down to cost! We need better language to cover the varieties of remote/hybrid working …I propose: Unrestricted remote - work anywhere and anytime. We are asynchronous and we are able to handle employment/tax law across jurisdictions. Time restricted remote - We are able to handle employment/tax law across jurisdictions, but we work synchronously. Geo-restricted remote - there are legal/tax/ business reasons that we need you in a certain geography. Unrestricted hybrid - there are legal/tax/ business reasons that we need you to come in on certain pre-determined days. But other than that we don’t care where or when you work. Restricted hybrid - there are legal/tax/ business reasons that we need you to come in to the business and it may be unpredictable. So you must live in commuting range. On site - the work must be completed in our place of business.

Quick question for you on this chilly Fall morning. If a role is fully remote, why does the candidate need to live close to the office? This makes no sense to me. I understand that you may need the candidate to come into the office from time to time, but why can't they travel from wherever they live to come to the office that day? If it is for tax purposes, then I understand but that should be the only reason that a candidate needs to live near the office for a remote role.
