This year's annual Marion Thompson Wright Series focused on food of the Black Diaspora and access to healthy eating with the theme: "Beans, Greens, Tomatoes: Food, Accessibility, and Justice in the Black Diaspora." Black communities struggle with equitable access to land, water and food. This equity was greatly challenged by the pandemic, climate change, and food insecurity. "What we eat and how we get our food is a global issue that's also deeply personal. [Beyond food justice] there's deliciousness —and what traditions does that come from?" Rutgers-Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor Food defines our individual stories and identities, which are "framed against the background of a globalized food system." The Marion Thompson Wright Series (MTW) was co-founded in 1981 by two Rutger University professors, Price and Wright, as a series, honoring historian Marion Thompson Wright, conducted as a think tank accessible to the public, exploring the past to guide the future on Black American life and history —focused on building equity and justice. https://bit.ly/43pP2Jf

To Day is National BBQ day (US) Although the concept of barbecuing did not originate in America, the activity has become an essential part of American culture today. The history of barbecuing in the U.S. goes back to colonial times where any celebration was incomplete without a cookout. After the Revolutionary War was won and the first bridge was built over the Missouri River, barbecue celebrations erupted all over the nation. Even the American presidents are famous for hosting massive barbecues during times of success and on days of special observances. In fact, George Washington’s diary is said to have referenced a barbecue event that lasted for three days — that’s how deeply rooted barbecuing is in the country’s history! Barbecues are a White House tradition thanks to President Lyndon B. Johnson who started this trend by hosting the first-ever barbecue in the presidential headquarters. The name "Blanton's" is synonymous with quality today in the bourbon industry. But one of his greatest achievements most people don't know about, and it's a worthwhile story for anyone facing the challenge of leading people and a company through choppy waters. Literally. In late January, 1937, thick, grey storm clouds rained down for 22 straight days over a 600 mile stretch from Pittsburgh, PA to Illinois, including much of Kentucky. In the history books it is described as the Great Flood of 1937, and "a flood of biblical proportions". Over a million people were left homeless. Martial law had to be declared in several towns and cities, to maintain order and assist emergency services. It was an enormously stressful time, dealing with the disaster, and it's effects on the community, infrastructure, and basic needs like food and clean water. This was a time of manufacturing and mills. Many of the businesses that were damaged were plants, and of all sizes. Albert Blanton was running the George T. Stagg Distillery at the time. As the storm raged, many evacuated the area, hoping to come back to something. Blanton asked a few workers to stay behind with him, and try to protect what they could of the valuable distillery machinery, equipment and inventory. Many businesses never recovered, their operations - and bank accounts - damaged beyond repair. The companies that were able to get back in business took months to recover. But Blanton's operations, because he and a few others braved the threats, were up and running within two days after the storm ended. In the face of danger, he showed courage. Under the severest conditions, he showed decisiveness. Under a cloud of uncertainty, he displayed determined leadership.
