You need Google to search Reddit, and you need Reddit to search Google. What if Reddit forced users to log in to see content? This question was answered last year, when Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman, saw the value of Reddit's API. “Why are people searching Reddit specifically? The short answer is that Google search results are clearly dying. The long answer is that most of the web has become too inauthentic to trust.” (Article link in comments) Ok, so Google needs to better integrate (whether partnering/buying/etc) with those platforms providing *authentic* and *accurate* information that you can actually trust. They’re already doing this with Reddit showcasing them more in SERPs as well as partnering with them. But is this making their results better? No. Because although relatively authentic, those insights are not accurate at all. They’re full of spam and just bad advice. Google should look for these both *authentic* and *accurate* real human insights elsewhere (specialized, well moderated, niche forums/communities). Showcasing Reddit more is the lazy answer that doesn’t actually provide the best experience.

As someone who has worked in SEO for 7 years now, I'm finding Google Search results to be more annoying than ever before. Polling the crowd here: Do you still search via Google? The Reddit / Google dust-up is just the latest in a long line of companies that ignore their community and end up killing their Google juice. Back in 2010 Digg was on top. Then they decided to forgo their geeky users and recraft the site as a mainstream media service. The community revolted and then abandoned Digg.  And then Digg's search engine results started tanking. Bye Bye Digg. Arguably Reddit benefited the most and is now among the most popular communities on the web. Or it was, until they ignored history and decided to essentially block community apps from accessing the site. The community struck back. Last week almost 8,000 subreddits shut down for a few days, and even now many are either not available or private. As Google users are finding out, search links are mostly useless, creating a terrible experience for users and cratering Reddit's SERP leadership. The CEO is responding in a predictable fashion, warning the staff not to flout Reddit colors in public, and threatening top moderators with “replacement” if they keep protesting. It’s yet another example of ultimate hubris. When you live by the community, you die by the community. When you live on Google search, you die when it goes away. This probably won’t be the end of Reddit (hey, even Digg is still around), but will likely siphon of many users away to Discord and other places.  #reddit #communityengagement #seo #google #creatoreconomy #litrendingtopics

🔻 Three predictions about Google surfacing "hidden gems." 1) That person who was discussing issues with their bowel movements on a forum never expected in a million billion years that that discussion would have their post showing up at the top of Google search when someone searches for IBS. There are going to be lawsuits. 2) It will continue to make Google Search results more and more irrelevant because 99% of the time I do not want someone's personal experience point of view as an answer and currently with the way they're implementing Reddit I will get eight Reddit answers to something that I didn't need it for. Google assumed because people put Reddit or Pintrest into queries that they should surface them, but they should only surface them when you have Reddit or Pintrest in the query. I don't want social results if I haven't asked for them. 3) SEOs will abuse the heck out of this because it's so easy to game and it will be removed from Google by Spring this year. Like the FAQs before them. That may or may not be back. Parasite SEO for the win. I could be wrong on all three of these, but I think I'm going to be pretty spot-on though. What do you think?

Interesting thread going on over there on X.. Mark Williams-Cook pointed out reddit completely dominating a SERP that didn't quite make sense. I found an example myself and Google responded talking about search intent. In short, I think Google's systems are having an very hard time differentiating between users typing in reddit because they want results on reddit, or because they want information ABOUT reddit. Examples: - When did google add reddit filter? - Spam on reddit - What is reddit useful for? - Funny reddit usernames Ask yourselves for these searches, would the user want to see a result on reddit.com or another reputable source? Figuring out search intent is nothing new, and this happens all the time for queries with vague intent, but with the recent Google updates skyrocketing reddit's visibility, it seems very off-balance with that particular site. https://lnkd.in/ghjsYy9M

Google annually compensates Reddit with approximately $60 million for access to its data. Consequently, when conducting searches on Google, numerous Reddit entries frequently appear in the search outcomes. The emphasis on content from Reddit is not being given the importance it deserves. 5. An AI system is expected to be incorporated into Google's algorithm shortly. What to do: 1. Continue your usual activities. 2. Steer clear of relying on Reddit to gather information. 3. Bear in mind that achieving a top position on Google's search results does not necessarily equate to an increase in potential clients or revenue.

Greed may be good. But letting it make you stupid is not. CAT (Content for AI Training), the fool’s gold rush de jure, has speared Reddit in its greedy heart. https://lnkd.in/gZDq_hsC When your business lives in an ecosystem requiring massive volunteer participation it is best to consider where your value originates that keeps your organization alive, thriving, and ultimately adapting. Reddit’s value does not arise from reselling user/customer created content. Regardless of what the most evil lawyers of our time say (IP lawyers), that attitude will kill the golden goose, not exploit it. Reddit’s value does originate from being the infrastructure where massive volunteer and user communities socialize. Reddit’s value is not derived from obtuse user agreements written with such careless self-interest that Reddit may abuse critical elements of its own ecosystem with impunity. Reddit cannot resell or lay privileged monetized claim on user provided content. It cannot afford to abuse critically supporting open source and voluntary elements of its environment. UA be damned, because that is the surest way to stop Reddit from thriving and surviving. Being anti-social when your core business rests on being the place to socialize is outright suicide. Facebook which plays fast and loose with its users could not do this either. For good reason Facebook intentionally protects its primary value of reselling intimate private details to third party message manipulators from being in the lime light. Whatever you do, never, ever poison your primary value delivered that keeps you in the game. Guess they needed a better Enterprise Business Architecture team which understands the primacy of self-sustaining value generation above all else. Someday soon this will be a classic business study, except in MBA schools where they mock the very notion of value because it does not have units measured in currency. MBA thinking of value limited to fungible value in the form of currency has killed many an enterprise while they deny that the much more important notion of existentential value even exits.
