Everyone has the right to live freely & with dignity. Today, I honour the #LGBTIQ+ rights defenders who've courageously advanced equality & justice for so many. This is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through human rights advocacy. May #PrideMonth give us inspiration for the broader struggle for freedom.

We can't sleepwalk into a dystopian future where the power of AI is controlled by a few people - or worse, by opaque algorithms beyond human understanding. We need rules. Safety. Universal guardrails. How we act now will define our era.

UN Resident Coordinator in Micronesia covering Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Nauru and Kiribati
In support of the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) that is being held in Antigua and Barbuda from 27 to 30 May 2024, I have shared some thoughts on the establishment and rationale of the new UN Multi-Country Office for the North Pacific covering the five Micronesian countries of Palau, FSM, Marshall Islands, Nauru and Kiribati upon my appointment by the UN Secretary-General on 1 October 2021. A remote region with numerous small islands comprising of small populations that are the stewards of a vast expanse of ocean and earth stretching more than 7,000 km from Palau to Kiritimati Island. An Office that was created following years of lobby and advocacy by Micronesian leaders.
