UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center oncologist Dr. Dennis Slamon, whose groundbreaking research has transformed the treatment of breast cancer, has been awarded the 2024 Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research from the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR). Slamon first identified the HER2 gene, which is overexpressed in about 25-30% of breast cancer cases and is associated with a more aggressive form of the disease. Slamon has since led research, subsequent clinical trials, and uncovered discoveries that emphasize the importance of targeting the molecular mechanism, which has become the basis for most new cancer treatments. UCLA Health and the Los Angeles Dodgers recently celebrated a new member of the family -- UCLA West Valley Medical Center! In March 2024, UCLA Health acquired West Hills Hospital and Medical Center, which has been renamed. Our new location offers San Fernando Valley residents convenient access to our care. For this day, the Dodgers honored our Chief Strategy Officer, Santiago Munoz, as a Healthcare All-Star. Santiago threw out the first pitch at the game, while his family enjoyed a true Dodgers experience.

Good Morning America looks at a story of two brothers and a stranger connected by a life-saving kidney transplant. When Clay Garcelli wanted to donate his kidney to his brother but wasn't a match, he went through the UCLA Health Kidney Exchange Program, guaranteeing his brother a compatible kidney from someone else. Clay's donated kidney went to Sonya Glover, who had been waiting for a kidney for nearly ten years. Watch the story: https://lnkd.in/ggWy6rAE

Ten UCLA Health nurses are among 40 honored by the Simms/Mann Family Foundation in the second year of a campaign to recognize extraordinary nurses in Los Angeles. The honor is intended to highlight the outstanding, humanistic care nurses provide in a variety of community settings—particularly focusing on nursing greatness that has limited visibility, goes uncelebrated, or is unacknowledged by traditional metrics. Each nurse will receive a gift of $10,000 from the foundation. The unrestricted funds are an expression of gratitude for leadership, ingenuity, and expertise in caring for fellow human beings.
