Eric Ries invited our CEO James Reinhart to be one of the first guests of his new podcast, The Eric Ries Show. Episode 2 of The Eric Ries Show drops today! My guest is James Reinhart, founder of the second-hand resale platform ThredUp. James started out as a teacher, an experience that made him sure he wanted to make a positive impact on the world just as much as he wanted to build a successful business. ThredUp checks both boxes. It's changing the way people think about filling (and emptying) their closets -- its mission is "to inspire the world to think secondhand first" -- and it also generated $80 million in revenue in the first quarter of this year. In our conversation, we covered this duality from a number of perspectives, including the company culture that makes it possible, the importance of choosing the right investors, why an ambitious mission brings many advantages, what it was like to go public, and why more people should be thinking about purpose and profit as complementary rather than at odds with each other. As James put it, "intrinsically good businesses are good for bottom lines and good for the world." Like most great businesses, ThredUp was born to address a market failure: Secondhand clothes. Today, the secondhand apparel market is exploding, projected to reach $350 billion globally by 2028. But it’s not without tensions in making the business and operating model work – and scale. Our CEO James Reinhart sat down with the team at World Retail Congress to share his POV on how the resale market has evolved and how ThredUp continues to disrupt the space 15 years after its founding. Bringing awareness to the fashion crisis is a prerequisite for change. SNL's latest skit does just that in a playful way, highlighting the appeal and ills of ultra fast fashion. Sourcing Journal's writeup by Kate Nishimura captures its brilliance and what this means for the fashion industry. As Maxine Bédat asks, “The industry needs to look at itself in the mirror and ask, ‘Is this the direction we want to go?'”

If the deal seems too good to be true, it likely is. That was the subtext of Saturday Night Live’s bogus ad for “Xiemu,” the latest fast fashion hitmaker from China. Parodying the meteoric rise of e-commerce phenoms SHEIN and Temu models pranced across the screen in $10 dresses and $5 shoes as a voiceover proclaimed, “How so cheap? Don’t worry about it!”

Product circularity is a cornerstone of our impact strategy, and that goes beyond apparel, shoes, and accessories. Through our partnership with The AZEK Company, 100% of the Clean Out bags we get back from customers are repurposed into new outdoor living products. We're grateful to partners like The AZEK Company who share our commitment to reducing waste and creating a more sustainable future!

Much like the circular fashion industry – led by companies like ThredUp – we take a full-circle approach to creating our products. Happy #MembershipMonday! Meet #WIRLC member, Cora Buel 👋 Cora Buel is the Chief Revenue Officer of ThredUp. In this member spotlight, we asked Buel a series of questions about both her professional role and personal life, like: 🟣 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒂 𝒕𝒊𝒑 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒚𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒅 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎? 🔵 "Building trust is key. People work for people, not companies. Bringing people together in person and finding ways to organically connect and inspire the team to rely on each other even when not in person is helpful with building community and productivity. Then, setting expectations and holding your team accountable to responsibilities and outputs. Getting the job done is expected; where and how you do it can flex as long as business performance isn’t compromised."
