We know that it can be exhausting to live in a world where injustices against marginalized communities are broadcast on our screens almost daily. LGBTQ+ young people should not have to bear this burden, but fighting for your community to create change is a part of how LGBTQ+ folks have made so much progress over the past decades. And marginalized people — especially Black, trans, and nonbinary folks — have been at the forefront of leading the changes we’ve seen today. Everyday, we hear from LGBTQ+ young people who express fear, pain, and outrage at ongoing violence against our communities. We, too, share the dream that someday these protests will no longer be necessary in an inclusive world for all. As many march to build that world, we want to be mindful that the well-being of LGBTQ+ young people is our mission and to ensure safety for all who participate. We acknowledge that every LGBTQ+ young person’s situation and environment is different. Nevertheless, we created this guide to share tips to help LGBTQ+ young people navigate personal safety while channeling their energy into meaningful action — online or in person. Read the full guide below ⬇️🧡 https://lnkd.in/gV_YCNtK

Intersectionality is the thread that connects all of our identities and lived experiences — and how those identities relate to systems of power. Our latest blog dives into the importance of intersectionality, allyship, and deconstructing oppressive systems to build a better world for LGBTQ+ young people. CW: Gun violence, suicide This month, our research team partnered with @everytown to investigate the relationship between firearms, mass shootings, and suicide risk amongst LGBTQ+ young people. As we honor those 49 lives lost eight years ago at the Pulse Nightclub, we must acknowledge the impact of gun violence on our community. According to our research, 21% of LGBTQ+ young people reported that they or someone they know had been personally impacted by a mass shooting. Further, those LGBTQ+ young people reported higher rates of having seriously considered suicide in the last year. At The Trevor Project, we know that data makes a difference. When we know the statistics, we can focus prevention efforts where they’re needed most. On this eight year anniversary of the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, we remember those 49 members of our LGBTQ+ community whose lives were cut short due to hate-motivated gun violence. As years pass and the world spins on, it becomes even more necessary to honor those who lost their lives on June 12, 2016. We must say their names, uplift their stories, and celebrate their memory. Hate doesn’t win when it is brought into the light. Our community is a bright light that shines unrelentingly even during the hardest moments. We will not let hate win here. Join us in a moment of silence as we remember those we lost eight years ago: Stanley Almodovar III, Amanda L. Alvear, Oscar A. 39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. That number has to change — and it’s our mission to get it to 0%. But we can’t do it alone. We are grateful to our partners for allowing us to provide lifesaving crisis resources to LGBTQ+ young people 24/7/365, on every holiday, year-round 🧡 Thank you David Yurman, Fiserv, Snooze an A.M. Eatery, Caesars Entertainment, Inc., Kiss Products, Inc., JanSport, Pura Vida, and SWAROVSKI for your support of queer and trans youth this Pride Month! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

Alexis’ Story: A journey of understanding, allyship and entrepreneurship. For Alexis, Pride in Action is not just about being an ally, it's about showing your queer siblings they belong and are seen. 🧡 Through her experience with her partner's transition, Alexis realized the importance of gender-affirming care and resources for LGBTQ+ youth. Together they founded The Queer Trans Project — which has now provided over $200,000 worth of free gender-affirming items to youth across the country 🌈🙌 Their why? Ensuring that every individual who needs gender-affirming items can access them, especially BIPOC young people who often struggle with finding gender-affirming items that are inclusive. May Alexis’ experience and profound words inspire us to show up, listen, and advocate for LGBTQ+ young people. Read more about Alexis’ story on our blog: https://lnkd.in/g33gkv78
