The Smartling team joined the top echelon of the AI and global content industry at TAUS's Massively Multilingual Conference in Rome this past week.🇮🇹🏛️🍝 After three jam-packed days of workshops and debates about the latest technology breakthroughs and the future of AI, the Smartling team brought back the following key insights from #TAUSRome2024: ✅Quality standards vary based on use case 💎 For example, translations in the medical field must achieve near-human parity to avoid critical errors, while translation of short-form commercial content or for service agents can have more breathing room in terms of output quality. There are a number of ways to address quality, one of them being going back to ensuring you have the proper source content for the translation mix of your choice. ✅Go small or go home🤏 Despite the hype about large language models like #ChatGPT, the #Smartling team notices the industry moving towards smaller language models. While large language models will still play their part in tackling generalized tasks downstream, we anticipate seeing more task-specific models and fine-tuned models doing more heavy lifting in translation workflows in the future. ✅Shifting loc team strategies🔀 We anticipate that more localization teams will begin decentralizing access to translation tools, empowering their non-loc colleagues to contribute to the translation process. This shift will, in turn, free up localization teams to focus on implementing the appropriate tools and processes for optimal growth and efficiency. In the age of LLMs, companies will face the challenge of managing the cycle of Continuous Content Creation and enabling more teams to create and translate content seamlessly. ✅ Heads-up for the rest of the industry: evolve or risk falling behind😬 Other key components in localization, like Translation Management Systems and Language Service Providers, need to evolve to keep up with the changes in the industry. In the near future, localization teams will expect solution providers to easily exchange and use information within their complex tech stacks. Partnerships within the industry will be key to staying competitive in this rapidly evolving industry. - 🎁 To wrap it up, #TAUSRome2024 proved the transformative potential of combining AI and language technology, and the Smartling team couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of making localization more efficient, accurate, and inclusive than ever before.🚀⚡
