We are thrilled to share that David Zwirner’s Los Angeles flagship location at 606 North Western Avenue will open on May 23 with an inaugural exhibition presenting one work by each of its 80 artists. The newly constructed three-story building spans 15,000 sf of exhibition space and includes private viewing rooms, offices, and an outdoor terrace with views of the Hollywood sign. On the ground floor, skylights provide an abundance of controlled natural light to the primary public art spaces. Linking East and West Coast flagship locations, Selldorf designed a concrete staircase reminiscent of the distinctive stair at David Zwirner 20th Street in New York. We are thrilled to share that the Smithsonian American Art Museum reopens today, September 22, 2023. Our team is excited to share the completed project which includes the redesign of the third-floor galleries to create a unified space highlighting historical architectural elements while improving conditions for the collection’s display. Our design doubles the available wall area for installing art and implements new dynamic circulation patterns to reinforce the fluidity between artistic disciplines and historical narratives. This project also provides the first major reinstallation of the collection since 2006. The installation acknowledges the multifaceted narratives, identities and artistic practices that exist in the United States by including the often-overlooked histories and contributions by Asian American, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, LGBTQ+ and women artists, part of a museum-wide effort to provide a more expansive view of American art. Selldorf Architects proudly participated in the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW) hosted by Boston Valley Terra Cotta, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture and the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning. The workshop brought together architecture and engineering firms as well as structural hardware fabricators and allowed us to explore the innovative potential of terracotta in high-performance facades. Together with facade consultant SOCOTEC, Selldorf Architects developed an ingenious rainscreen system that achieved a remarkable 60% reduction in standard panel weight by implementing refined geometric shaping and parabolic strengthening. Furthermore, we challenged conventional boundaries by incorporating iron-oxide pigment, a byproduct of cleaning up of environmental hazardous acid water from abandoned coal mines, into both terracotta body and glazing, demonstrating the harmonious coexistence of innovation and sustainability within architectural design. As ACAW continues to expand and evolve, we anticipate even more exciting developments at the intersection of design, technology, sustainability and fabrication in the years ahead.
