Even after almost 15 years at Riot, the process of watching games come to life still amazes me. Early development looks like gray boxes, placeholder characters, and a team asking you to imagine what could be. It doesn’t have the features, the crisp gameplay, or flashy marketing. You don’t see the esports arenas or hear the crowds cheering. You just have a handful of passionate devs who believe in something really deeply, even when it’s hard to explain or even harder to prove. The reality is that art does not come off a factory line. It comes from the heart. It comes from a deep understanding of what an audience is in search of and a maniacal and determined focus to take those feelings and understandings and manifest something that has meaning to them. VALORANT was one of those projects. The original team, led by Stephen Lim, started working on it not too long after I started. It took a huge amount of courage and conviction to keep fighting for this game. It also took hundreds of Rioters committed to the original vision and mission with incredible leaders like Anna Donlon and Andy Ho to carry the torch and bring the vision to life. And to be clear, the fight wasn’t easy. It still isn’t. You often fight against internal and external doubts, shifting competitive landscapes, and even your own questions about whether your work will resonate with the players you deeply care about. The team launched VALORANT in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time of chaos and uncertainty. While so many things were standing still, this team kept pushing forward. And somehow, in that time where we were all physically apart, they delivered something that brought us together. Five years later, it’s incredible to see where that belief has led. VALORANT is more than a game: it’s a global community; it’s a creative platform; and it continues to grow thanks to the passion of the players, pros, creators, and devs who keep shaping it every day. And a team that began as less than ten is now well over 400 - a combination of passionate developers, a global publishing team, a committed Esports organization, and Rioters across entertainment, music and support. We say at Riot that everyone - no matter where in our organization - makes Games. And VALORANT is a reflection of that shared commitment. And now, we’re here at Masters Toronto with some of the best teams in the world battling it out not far from where I grew up, in the city that raised me. It’s surreal. I can’t wait to feel the energy of the crowd and reflect on how far this game and this community have come. To everyone who's believed in VALORANT—from the first gray boxes through dozens of moments when it wasn’t clear the game would reach the finish line—thank you. At every turning point, there were people who saw what VALORANT could and should become, and who pushed to bring that vision to life. You're the reason we're here today, and why we're only getting started. The best is yet to come. See you in Toronto!

Reflecting a bullet? In Arcane, Mel makes it look easy. Bringing that reflection ability into League of Legends? A bit more complicated. In the latest Riot Games Tech Blog, Rioters Cliff Zhu and Adriana Solano unpack the design challenges, gameplay decisions, and engine innovations that brought Rebuttal—Mel’s W—to life. Requiring real-time missile hijacking, shader-level recoloring, and the future-proofing of Champion scripts, this was one of the most complex ability builds we’ve ever done. 🔧 Tech deep dive: https://lnkd.in/gpDMWfch
