⚡Great post from Leonardo Furtado at AWS. How do you mitigate network outage risk for your enterprise? Do you… 🕸 Use private network connectivity to bypass the best-effort public internet? ⛓ Design your network for full diversity? 💻 Use software-defined networking or Network as a Service rather than nailed-up connections so that if a service goes down, traffic can be directed to alternate paths immediately and/or you can spin up new network connections on-demand? #networkengineer #networkengineering #computernetworks

If you are a network engineer, one of your most terrifying fears is a complete system-wide network failure. This would result in a chaotic outage that affects every part of your business. Just the thought of such an event happening in your organization can give you serious chills! 😰 In some countries like Brazil, we often refer to it as "desligar a rede da tomada!" because it is one of the extreme actions you may end up taking in these scarce situations! A real nightmare! Some of the most well-known catastrophe cases out there include: ⛈️ Armenia's Internet Cut Off (2011): An entire country, the Republic of Armenia, lost connectivity when a 75-year-old woman accidentally damaged land cables during an excavation in neighboring Georgia. ⛈️ British Airways IT Failure (2017): A global IT crash led to the grounding of British Airways' entire fleet, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. This chaos was caused by an IT contractor accidentally turning off a power supply at a key data center. ⛈️ China Telecom Outage (2019): This outage caused substantial packet loss across China Telecom's backbone, affecting services in mainland China, Singapore, and multiple points in the U.S. It disrupted over a hundred services globally, including major U.S. brands like Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Slack, Workday, and SAP. ⛈️ Google Cloud Outage (2019): A major network outage impacted services hosted in parts of Google's us-west, us-east, and us-central regions. This affected Google's own applications, including GSuite and YouTube, and lasted more than four hours. ⛈️ WhatsApp Connectivity Issues (2019): A large number of global users experienced connectivity issues with WhatsApp due to a massive route leak that steered traffic incorrectly, causing substantial packet loss and service disruption. ⛈️ Cloudflare Routing Mishap (2019): A significant BGP routing error impacted users accessing services fronted by CDN provider Cloudflare. This affected various online services, including Discord and Nintendo Life, and lasted nearly two hours. ⛈️ Apple Services Outage (2019): On July 4, users experienced significant packet loss when connecting to Apple's website and services like Apple Pay. This incident was caused by a BGP route flap, disrupting services for over 90 minutes. What contingency measures do you plan for and implement to prevent such disasters from occurring? Or mitigate them? Let's discuss this! #networkengineering #technology

A Thursday chart - 2024 Uptime Institute survey shows the causes of outages. Network should not be over 20% in my view..... Refer to a redundant SDN with multi-cloud access and connectivity across any DC location. -www.packetfabric.com
