The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement through its research with the New Jersey Institute of Technology tested a newly designed surface water dispersant monitoring system at Ohmsett. The purpose of the test was to assess the sea-keeping characteristics and behavior of the frame with a full instrument package, which included a droplet size imaging high resolution camera, particle size analyzer, fluorometer and multi-sensor water quality probe. The next phase for the monitoring system is a field evaluation deployment test in Raritan Bay/New York Bay later this month.

About us
Ohmsett offers independent and objective performance testing in a realistic saltwater environment essential to developing new technology for oil spill response research, marine energy, and the blue economy. The outdoor wave and tow tank provides controlled, repeatable conditions to help validate engineering expectations and evaluate prototype designs under varying flow, position, and load conditions. The above-ground concrete test tank measures 203 meters long by 20 meters wide by 2.4 meters deep and is filled with 10 million liters (2.6 million gallons) of water maintained at open ocean salinity. The tank's wave generator creates realistic sea states, while modern data collection and video systems record real-time test results. Managed by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) under a contract with Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA), Ohmsett is located close to the Atlantic shoreline in Leonardo, New Jersey (about one hour's drive south of New York City). It is the largest outdoor facility of its type, providing users from around the world with a distinctive testing environment. United States Coast Guard personnel recently visited Ohmsett to study and practice oil spill response methods and technologies. This week-long oil spill response training included strategic planning, command and control, oil spill physics and chemistry, booming and skimming, dispersant application, and monitoring methods. The program emphasizes hands-on experience with specific equipment, technologies and techniques employed during offshore oil spill responses.

I had a chance to visit the National Renewable Energy Lab Flatirons site in Colorado with other ARA colleagues the other day. We met with a great group and had the chance to talk about their wave energy conversion efforts. We also got to see their wave tank. It's a little smaller than the Ohmsett one, but it is inside.

What We’re Working On Taking advantage of the break in the testing schedule over the holidays, it’s time to give the bridge drive motors a lift. Last week, the Ohmsett staff disconnected one of the two 500 HP DC drive motors that power the drive system that moves the bridges along the length of the tank. A crane lifted the motor on the east side of the tank off its mountings so that it could be transported to a local facility where it will receive much needed refurbishment. That’s what the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement has set out to answer over the last couple of weeks of testing.
