O'Brien Engineering, Inc. (OEI) is an engineering firm located in North Texas. We were established in 1987 as a specialty firm providing hydraulic/hydrologic modeling and analysis. We remain true to this core competency including dam and levee safety while diversifying with complementary disciplines including general civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, structural engineering, environmental, permitting, and other support services to best serve our clients: real estate services, survey management, program management, architecture, etc. A certified Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) and State of Texas HUB firm, we serve customers nationwide and overseas. Our work and clients are diversified; we serve federal, municipal, state, other A/E firms, and private individuals. Our federal customers include DoD, DHS, and VA. We hold multiple IDIQ and MATOC contracts as a prime.

    OEI is looking for Facility Condition Assessment Assessors. Qualified and interested? - Part time - Intermittent opportunities but 40 hrs per week when in the field. Typical stint is 2 weeks in the field collecting assessment data and 1-2 weeks at home entering data into a database - SMS BUILDER experience preferred - Design experience preferred (i.e. architectural, structural, mechanical, or electrical) - Opportunity to travel - Paid per diem based on location - Travel expenses are paid up front or reimbursed If we sign you up, but don’t end providing you with at least one trip before 1 year passes and we don’t renew your agreement, we will pay you $100 for your effort.     I'm reading (okay, okay, listening to) a book about Abraham Lincoln and reminded again of his apropos quote, stated during his second inaugural address, a few weeks before he was assassinated. "With malice toward none with charity for all with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan - to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."     I didn’t know until recently that Military Working Dogs are Non-Commissioned Officers. That's pretty awesome. OEI was awarded a Task Order to provide renovations of a Military Working Dog kennel at Fort Johnson. The project scope was considerably challenging, because the design intent was to take an open-air outdoor kennel and convert it to an indoor kennel to better protect the MWD NCOs. Such a drastic change in building use resulted in multiple problems for maintenance, operations, humidity, noise, odor, etc.. Furthermore, the UFCs and Army Regulations did not provide clear design criteria for an indoor kennel complex of this type. OEI's design professionals were able to find design criteria from industry standards that were adapted to this usage. The proposed solution was able to address all of the likely stakeholder concerns while not requiring a costly complete reconstruction of the existing facility. As a result of our efforts and ultimate design solution, OEI was awarded “Very Good” CPARS.

    I’m “merely” responsible for marketing for my company, O’Brien Engineering, Inc. But I’m honored to hold that role because I have unwavering confidence in our technical experts that they will lead every project intentionally, with care. A couple of years ago I was watching an albeit fictional series that followed a Seal Team. One of the characters was a former SEAL team member, injured during conflict trying to ensure his fellow Americans’ safety. During one of the scenes, he was visiting a Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), trying desperately to get help for his TBI. The clip showed that he was aggravated by construction in the parking lot (and therefore he had to walk a long distance to the main hospital), a dingy and low ceiling interior facility with very poor wayfinding (he got lost a couple of times in the scene), and, after finally finding his doctor, received some disappointing news about his treatment plan and progress. At the end of the bleak scene, he was again frustrated by his inability to navigate the hospital and the parking lot. After a few moments in his car, he took his own life.    This is a made-up, Hollywood story that is obviously ripped from past headlines (think Walter Reed deficiencies in the mid-2000s). But for us in this world of healthcare/military design, it is palpable and even instructional. I can’t control everything in how we serve our veterans, but I do lead our efforts to serve our federal government either at the installation-level or VAMC-level with calm confidence that my team cares about what we do and how we serve. Whether it’s a parking lot redesign with thorough construction phasing, a wayfinding plan, an existing facility renovation, or new design, we are fervently aware of who we serve and why.   OEI serves our clients in the federal, municipal, and private sector and our team has equal dedication and passion for each project/problem/solution. In the coming weeks I'll provide specific project examples on how we were presented with a problem and tasked with a solution to see how we thoughtfully dug into the root cause and developed a solution that met the need.   We are grateful to be a small part of the solution for those who have given so much for us.
