Amid generative AI’s potential is a lurking security problem that experts have now dubbed “shadow AI,” akin to previous cybersecurity issues associated with new technologies that begin creeping into enterprise networks and infrastructure. Previously, “shadow IT” and “shadow cloud” caused headaches for tech professionals trying to secure corporate data from escaping when businesses or employees experimented with unsanctioned and untested versions of new tools. The Cyberhaven report found that 73.8% of ChatGPT accounts currently deployed are non-corporate instances that lack the security and privacy controls of ChatGPT Enterprise. That percentage is higher for Google AI tools. The survey also noted: “In March 2024, 27.4 percent of corporate data employees put into AI tools was sensitive.” At the recent RSA Conference in San Francisco, CISOs and other cybersecurity leaders expressed concern that the same risks associated with shadow IT and cloud are re-manifesting themselves with generative AI. “Every few years, some hot new trend upends the tech stack and how we go about securing sensitive data and assets. Metaphorically, the livestock has escaped the barn, then the barn was burned down, and now the morning after we have to contend with untamable organic free-range IT,” noted John Bambenek, president at Bambenek Consulting, LTD. For tech and security professionals charged with helping to bring generative AI into the enterprise, securing it, protecting data and creating policies, understanding shadow AI and its consequences is critical to developing new skills as the enterprise landscape changes to accommodate these modern tools and platforms. The stereotype of tech professionals working solo in dark rooms is outdated. Today, tech professionals collaborate on impactful projects, making teamwork essential. Here are some key elements of teamwork and how to improve them: ⭐ Communication ▫️ Active Listening: Engage fully, don’t just wait to speak. ▫️ Embrace Different Styles: Adapt to your audience’s communication style. ▫️ Clarity is King: Use clear, concise language. Avoid jargon with non-technical colleagues. ⭐ Collaboration ▫️ Welcome Diverse Ideas: Diversity strengthens teams. ▫️ Be Open to Feedback: Constructive criticism is a growth opportunity. ▫️ Recognize Contributions: A simple "thank you" or public acknowledgment goes a long way. ⭐ Task Management ▫️ Define Roles and Responsibilities: Clearly outline tasks. ▫️ Delegate Effectively: Assign tasks based on strengths and expertise. ▫️ Embrace Transparency and Accountability: Encourage open communication and uphold commitments. ⭐ Working with Non-Technical Team Members ▫️ Embrace Patience and Empathy: Be patient and understanding. ▫️ Speak the Language: Translate technical jargon into everyday language. ▫️ Focus on the "Why": Explain the importance and impact of technical work. ⭐ Conflict Resolution ▫️ Focus on the Issue, Not the Person ▫️ Active Listening is Key: Understand before you respond. ▫️ Seek Common Ground: Find areas of agreement and build from there. #Teamwork #CommunicationSkills #Collaboration
