🎙 NECEC President Pens Insightful Op-Ed in The Bay State Banner newspaper! 🎙 Today, our President, Joe Curtatone, has an op-ed in the Bay State Banner calling for support of the Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic Development (EOED) Mass Leads Act and a dual approach to economic and environmental policy. "While the climate crisis is one of the most pressing issues of our time, it does not register with the average voter, who is reasonably more concerned with being able to put food on the table and raise their family while costs for the basics continue to skyrocket. However, addressing climate change is not just about preserving our environment—it's about transforming our economy and creating jobs. With the right policies and a commitment from our legislative leadership, we can create thousands of good-paying jobs in infrastructure, manufacturing, and transportation, which benefit communities of color who have been traditionally left behind. If done right, this dual economic and environmental policy approach can usher in a new era of prosperity and sustainability." -- Joe Curtatone Shoutout to the new owners of the Bay State Banner, André Stark and Ron Mitchell, who we had the pleasure of hearing at Meet the Media, hosted by MASSterlist and SHNS. 🎉 Major NECEC Priority Bill Signed into Law in RI Last Night! 🎉 Rhode Island Governor Daniel J. McKee signed the Energy Storage Act (S2499 and H7811 sub A) into law last night. This act will: 🔋 Require the public utilities commission to engage stakeholders to adopt a framework for an energy storage system tariff for energy storage systems connected to the electric distribution system. 🔋 Set energy storage systems deployment goals. 🔋 Direct the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank, in consultation with the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources, to develop funding programs that support the deployment of storage in the state. 🌟 Important Context: Prior to the signage of this bill, RI had only one large energy storage system, developed by an NECEC member, Agilitas Energy. NECEC worked on securing a state-level commitment for energy storage deployment for multiple years, so we are thrilled to see our efforts succeed. This year, we worked closely with Advanced Energy United and RENEW Northeast to advocate for the bill. The work included testifying in front of both the House and Senate on the importance of this legislation, many conversations with legislators, and a letter to the governor explaining the importance and value of the bill.

🌟 Yesterday Was an Amazing Day for Climate Tech in Massachusetts! 🌟 First was an amazing celebration by Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao, Energy & Environment Bureau Chief Rebecca L Tepper, and Massachusetts Clean Energy Center CEO Emily Reichert, to highlight Massachusetts climate tech leaders and companies recognized on TIME Magazine’s Top 100 GreenTech Companies list. Then, NECEC joined partners in hosting a panel discussion about the opportunities in climate tech, where leaders and innovators convened to explore opportunities and discuss cutting-edge solutions for a sustainable future. One thing that was crystal clear from all the speakers, including Joshua Aviv, CEO of SparkCharge; Shreya Dave, Co-Founder & CEO of Via Separations; Hudson Gilmer, Co-founder & CEO of LineVision; and Julie Bliss Mullen, CEO of Aclarity, was the amazing climate tech ecosystem that currently exists in Massachusetts, from accelerators like Greentown Labs, The Engine, and Cleantech Open Northeast / NECEC, to MassCEC. While challenges exist, Massachusetts is up to the task and ready to lead the world. A huge shoutout to our partners Associated Industries of Massachusetts, Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM), The Engine, Greentown Labs, Massachusetts Business Roundtable, Massachusetts Competitive Partnership, and Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation for hosting the insightful panel. Thank you, Rebecca Davis, for moderating this insightful conversation. Good luck to all the TIME Magazine’s Top 100 GreenTech Companies represented in the audience, your future looks bright! Let’s continue to drive our innovation and climate solutions! #ClimateTech #Innovation #Massachusetts #GreentownLabs #NECEC #GreenTech #Sustainability

🌍 Must Read Boston Globe Media Column: Biden vs. Trump on the Climate Crisis 🌍 A recent column in The Boston Globe explores the stark differences between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump regarding the climate crisis. As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, the candidates' contrasting visions for addressing this critical issue are coming into sharp focus. President Biden is committed to urgently tackling the climate crisis, aiming for a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. His approach includes substantial investments in renewable energy and green jobs and strongly emphasizes rejoining and leading international climate agreements to foster global cooperation. On the other hand, former President Trump prioritizes economic growth and energy independence, with a continued reliance on fossil fuels. His policies involve rolling back environmental regulations and withdrawing from global climate commitments to prioritize national interests. The Boston Globe column highlights these profound differences, discussing their policies' potential long-term impacts on the environment and the economy. It also considers the role of the U.S. in global climate efforts under each candidate's leadership. " In 2023, the United States recorded the most extreme weather ever documented, with 28 climate-related calamities that each wreaked more than $1 billion in weather-related damage, for a total cresting $92 billion, according to a report by BloombergNEF and the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. Forty percent of Americans lived in a county that suffered extreme weather in 2021, with at least 656 deaths attributed to those disasters, according to The Washington Post. Sadly, though scientists have warned about the perils of global warming for decades, it took the actual empirical experience of its effects to jolt Washington out of the dogmatic deadlock encouraged by the fossil fuel industry." - scot lehigh As we approach the election, NECEC knows that it is essential for voters to understand the contrasting views of candidates. This year, the future of our planet hinges on the decision of every voter. Stay informed and engaged as we navigate this crucial election season. Before July 31st, we have the opportunity to drive Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's #MassLeadsAct, a transformative economic development package including a $1 billion climatetech investment over 10 years, across the finish line. Businesses and environmental advocates alike are energized by this once-in-a-generation opportunity to claim the climatetech industry for Massachusetts' economy and people. ELM's Elizabeth Turnbull Henry and Associated Industries of Massachusetts' Brooke M. Thomson published a joint op-ed in the Boston Business Journal about how this legislation will not only drive our state's innovation and competitiveness, but also expedite our clean energy transition and grow our green economy. Our state is poised to become the global hub for climatetech, but it is now up to our Legislature to make that a reality. Let's seize this opportunity - both for climate and for business.
