Dumbbells don't need to be dumb! ;) Love the back story of how the Kabata financing round came together. Check back in a few: The Menlo Ventures team will soon be known for our incredible portfolio, strong track record, and MASSIVE biceps. 💪 💪 💪 😉
Excited to announce our $5M seed raise led by Shawn Carolan at Menlo Ventures! ⚡ Story time... Early last year we were doing video call after video call with investors and not seeing much traction. I remember thinking, "Why don't they get it? Dumbbells are the most used piece of fitness equipment and have seen zero innovation." That's when 2x NBA Champion Zaza Pachulia texted me that he was coming to LA and wanted to check out our dumbbells in person. I showed him a demo in my home and he immediately voiced, "You need to drive up to the Bay Area right now and put Kabata in people's hands. Video calls don't do it justice." So...we took his advice. My co-founder Brian and I drove up to the Bay Area three separate times with the dumbbells in our trunk, a roughly 14-hour roundtrip each time. On the 2nd trip, as Friday evening approached and the week was coming to a close, Brian and I were debating driving back to LA or staying another night. Brian said, "I'm tired, and the Warriors are playing. Why don't we hit a sports bar, grab a bite and drive home in the morning?" I relented. As we were walking to the sports bar, I got an email from Shawn Carolan at Menlo. I'd emailed him and Matt Murphy earlier in the week but hadn't heard back, until that moment. Shawn asked, "How long are you here? Want to come to my house tomorrow morning? I'll make you coffee." We showed him and his son the dumbbells that Saturday morning, and they were amazed. "You built all of this with just four people?" he asked. A couple weeks and a few term sheets later, we picked Shawn and the Menlo team to lead our oversubscribed seed round. Not only did Shawn instantly see the vision, we liked what he brought to the table. A Midas List VC with investments in amazing companies including Uber, Roku, Chime and Siri, people know him as one of the best consumer investors in Silicon Valley. Little did he know, I'd looked up to him during my prior VC days as well. I'd always wanted to work with an investor of his caliber and - full circle - now we are. AI, personalized analytics, & data-driven coaching are where the industry is headed. And we're proud to play a small role in moving the fitness industry forward. Thank you to Athletech News & Fitt Insider for covering our raise, to our board including Dilip Goswami from Molekule and Deepen Parikh at Courtside Ventures, and to our amazing investors & supporters. Welcome to the next generation in strength training. We're just getting started. 💪 Naval Ravikant, Andy Dunn, Nakisa Bidarian, Dave Asprey, Sam Parr, Todd Deacon, Brandon Chubb, Jon Ma, Jordan Nathan, Sandy Cass, Bryan Mahoney, Kirk Lacob, Joe Speiser, Ali Guthy, Ryan Renker, Hugo C., Weston Moyer, Cecilia Ng, Grayson Kinsella, Sarah A.
