About us
Kiva (www.kiva.org) is a mission-driven technology non-profit. We run a global marketplace platform for crowd-funded micro-loans to serve the financially excluded in sectors such as education, water, clean energy, and refugee resettlement. Maria grew up in the Andes Mountains of Peru. She was raised by a community operating in a circular economy, where food was grown organically and put back into the Earth sustainably. She later lived in other Latin American countries and worked in international human rights, before moving to the United States to work for refugee rights with the United Nations. But she felt unsatisfied. "I reached back into my roots and became invested in offering sustainable and organic food to lower-income families. Working with the police and local Latino community, I created the first Latino restaurant in the shopping mall of my community." Maria opened The Rising Loafer in 2003, bringing fresh baked goods, breakfast, and lunch items to her customers. The Rising Loafer prides itself on being sustainable, with Maria growing many of the ingredients herself, and making sure everything is ethically sourced. When COVID-19 hit, Maria wasn't sure if her business could survive. A Kiva loan, funded by 284 lenders, helped her pay rent, and today she continues to provide organic food to her community. 🙌
