Founder, Managing Partner at Inspired Capital

A world without insurance is a world devoid of risk-taking—and consequently, a world without growth. This week on the podcast, I'm delighted to spotlight one of the founders in the Inspired Capital portfolio: Paul Monasterio, Co-Founder and CEO of Kalepa—the company on a mission to disrupt the trillion-dollar+ insurance industry. In 2018, Paul started Kalepa with its flagship product, an AI-powered copilot empowering commercial underwriters to write more profitable business, faster. And just a few years later, Kalepa has been recognized as one of the most innovative insurtechs in the world by FinTech Global. We cover:  ➡ How to use an outsider's perspective to your advantage  ➡ Why a product demo should be used to create real value for potential customers  ➡ How AI will enhance—not overtake—underwriters abilities to evolve with an increasingly complex world  ➡ Why asking the question, “Where else are you applying?,” is crucial to an interview process  ➡ How his training as a PhD in Nuclear Science and Engineering from MIT frames his approach as a founder Paul has led Kalepa to tremendous success thus far, and I’m inspired every day as I watch him turn his vision into reality. Founder, Managing Partner at Inspired Capital

Thrilled to host an Inspired Capital portfolio company on the podcast this week: I spoke with Nami Baral, the visionary Founder & CEO behind Niural, a generational product enabling businesses to take care of payroll, HR, benefits, payments and compliance globally in 150 countries—all in one powerful system. Nami, a first-mover at her core, previously founded Harvest, a fintech company that built the first AI superagent to reduce debt for American consumers. Harvest was acquired by Acorns in 2021. With multiple successful exits under her belt, each decision made at Niural is powered by Nami’s commitment to thinking in decades and keeping the customer at the center of everything. Here are some takeaways from the episode: 1️⃣ Foster Trust Through Product Excellence: Nami's approach isn't merely about outdoing competitors by 10x; her team’s mission is to build a product that's 100x better than incumbents. When your product outperforms to this degree, your existing customers become natural advocates and your company will grow simply from word of mouth. 2️⃣ Build with Long-Term Vision: AI is already making seismic shifts in the way companies operate, and its impacts are only accelerating. The future of work will be global and efficient, and Niural is building a product that not only tackles present day challenges but can adapt to the evolving complexities of tomorrow's global workforce. In a decade or less, human employees will work alongside AI employees, and we must be prepared for a drastic change in the labor laws, compliance, and regulatory landscape across the globe. 3️⃣ Prioritize Low Ego & Work Ethic: At a startup, speed and execution all come down to hiring exceptional talent. Teams must be lean and there is no room for bad actors. Niural focuses on retaining talent by empowering their teams to tackle complex problems. Employees will act more like owners when they are given the opportunity to make an impact on meaningful challenges. 4️⃣ Craft Your Own Work Life Balance: As a repeat founder, Nami knew that her next venture demanded her full commitment. She also knew that whether or not her family was on the cap table, she would need their full support. Trusting her instincts and recognizing the uniqueness of her family members’ skill sets and dedication, Nami defied conventional wisdom and asked her brother and her husband to join her founding team. 5️⃣ Founder Psychology: Despite being born in rural Nepal where most girls were raised with the ultimate goal of marriage, Nami’s forward-thinking parents taught her that her dreams should have no ceiling. From the very beginning, she learned that there was no substitute for hard work and she shouldn’t limit herself despite a culture that dictated women belonged in the home. She carries this mindset with her and uses it to her advantage today as she reimagines the status quo. Tune in for the rest of Nami’s company-building wisdom here: https://bit.ly/3QDSACS
