Gray Area is a nonprofit center applying culture and technology for social good.

About us

Our mission is to apply art and technology to create positive social impact through education, civic engagement, and public programs. We use digital tools to create art and design projects that benefit society. We test and scale projects with high impact potential, teach digital tools to support artists and technologists, and inspire our community by promoting meaningful new work. We apply the promise and inspiration of digital art to a broader social context. Our programs are transforming cities into creative outlets, applying technology to solve problems, and shaping how art is created and consumed in the digital era.

🗳️ It’s been a while since I’ve put my campaigning hat on! I'm looking forward to being an advisor at Cooperative Impact Lab's AI for Organizing and Campaigns Hackathon this Friday. The most important election of our lifetime (for those of us in the US) is just around the corner, and #AI is already interfering with our democracy through misinformation and manipulation. I'm excited to be joining this event that explores how AI can offer powerful tools to elevate progressive movements. 100+ developers, designers, organizers, and fellow changemakers will be working on challenges from groups like @Faircount.orgVOCAL-NYPeople's ActionAAPI Victory Alliance, and the Bay Delta Trust bioregional asset mapping project with Lawrence Grodeska. Join us at Gray Area this Friday! Join us this Sunday for the Opening Reception of 𝘽𝙤𝙧𝙣 𝙖 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢, a multimedia exhibition and event series by artists Paula Te and Edward Gunawan. For this opening reception, we'll celebrate National Poetry Month with poets Lee Herrick, Kim Shuck, Ayodele Nzinga, and Michelle Lin. About 𝘽𝙤𝙧𝙣 𝙖 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢: Featuring a week-long program with an exhibition, workshop, and artist talks, this series explores the unseen historical forces that shape our culture and personal identity. Centering experiences of Chinese Indonesian exclusion, the exhibition takes the form of erasure poems based on actual laws from this dark chapter of history, presented as physical works that trigger augmented reality experiences.
