Today is Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. #Juneteenth offers an opportunity to reflect on past injustices and the need to continue addressing them today, to advocate for change, and to educate society about racial discrimination and how to combat systemic injustice and inequality. I’m honored to be officially joining the Board of The Conservation Alliance. I’ll be joining a group of some of the most inspiring individuals I’ve ever met, working on some of the most meaningful projects I could ever dream of. If you’ve followed me for very long on here, you know how passionate I am about #Conservation and #Climate work. This last year has allowed me to engage more fully in this critically important work, hopefully laying foundations for endless future generations of photographers to enjoy this wild and beautiful world. I’ve been in Washington DC three times in the last year advocating for environmental projects and progress in Congress, The White House, and The Department of the Interior. This year has been one of nearly unprecedented progress on critically needed protections and policies. https://lnkd.in/gcSuCvGn My work this year hasn’t just been in suits and conference rooms. I’ve been fortunate enough to explore so many of the open spaces and wild places we’re working to protect. With an incredible group of new friends, I drove across the American Southwest in electric trucks to call for the designation of new national monuments. (Most of which have since become reality!) https://lnkd.in/gtEGPX8B Alongside the amazing crew at Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project and with my friend Representative Gabe Vasquez I was able to visit and float the Gila River. The Gila Wilderness is our world’s first National Wilderness area, now 100 years old. Representative Vasquez is working on getting a Wild and Scenic River designation to further protect the Gila. https://lnkd.in/gA-XCcxu I was also able to return to the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument to learn more and experience the landscape more fully. Chuckwalla is a place that is especially near and dear to my heart, and hopefully we’ll see some really great news there very soon. https://lnkd.in/gB__47RF Next stop, off to Alaska in a few days. Stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/gMBAxMkN There are too many people to thank for giving me these opportunities, and I’m going to forget most of them. But I want to call out a few in particular that it just wouldn’t be fair to leave out. ❤️ Shoren Brown Rebecca Gillis Conor McElyea Ángel Peña Annie Nyborg Kelly Campbell Bridgette Windell Kim Paymaster Lilly Zoller Paul Hendricks A huge special thanks to Alastair Morrison Jolly Anton Lorimer Scott Kinzie Crystal Duarte (and bigger team) for doing the actual hard work while I sit around and cheer.
