A David Hockney painting bought by famed US screenwriter and producer Norman Lear for $64,000 is expected to fetch up to $35 million at auction. “A Lawn Being Sprinkled” is going under the hammer as part of a sale of the collection of Norman Lear and Lyn Davis Lear that is estimated to bring in more than $50 million, according to a statement from auction house Christie’s. Lear paid what was a record-breaking price for a Hockney work when he acquired the painting in 1978, according to the auction house, but nowadays the artist’s most valuable pieces sell for tens of millions rather than tens of thousands.

A high-stakes union election is happening at a Mercedes-Benz plant near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the only plant for the luxury automaker in North America. The fallout will be significant whether the workers at Mercedes-Benz vote to join the United Auto Workers union or not. The UAW is hoping to carry its strong momentum right now, as its decision to use a “stand up strike” strategy hitting the Big Three automakers all at once brought unprecedented attention and record contracts for workers. And last month, it won a union election at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, its first victory in three attempts to organize the factory. Winning the Alabama vote would mean the UAW’s biggest push to grow its membership in decades will keep going. The UAW watched for decades as non-unionized factories owned by companies from Kia to Toyota to Tesla to Rivian popped up across the country, especially in the southern United States. Read more ⬇️

Consumers may be fed up with high prices at the store, but they’re still willing to splurge on travel. Disney’s parks and experiences revenue grew roughly 11% during the second quarter from the year prior. The company said that while attendance isn’t at the elevated levels seen following the end of Covid pandemic restrictions, it still rose at its US and Hong Kong Disneyland resorts. Other key players in the travel industry have reported a similar trend this earnings season. Americans, especially lower-income consumers, have pulled back spending at retailers as goods inflation outpaces wage growth. They’ve even become frugal with some experience-based spending like dining out, opting instead to eat at home. But travel demand remains robust and is expected to ramp up in the upcoming months. Two brothers who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were arrested on US charges that they carried out a cutting-edge scheme to exploit the Ethereum blockchain’s integrity and steal $25 million worth of cryptocurrency. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan called the scheme perpetrated by Anton Peraire-Bueno, 24, and James Peraire-Bueno, 28, “novel” and said the case marked the first time that such a fraud had ever been the subject of U.S. criminal charges. Authorities said they executed their elaborate heist in April 2023, stealing $25 million from traders in just 12 seconds by fraudulently gaining access to pending transactions and altering the movement of cryptocurrency.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke past the 40,000 threshold for the first time ever, fueled by an encouraging inflation report. The blue-chip index was up about 114 points, or 0.3%, and trading around 40,022 mid-morning. Speeches from Fed officials also lifted investors’ moods. New York Fed President John Williams told Reuters that inflation trends look good and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin had positive takes on April’s light retail sales.
