🐕🦺 Sofia is just one client whose peace of mind and independence are enhanced by a #servicedog. Her service dog, Trooper, plays a critical role in her day-to-day life, alerting to important sounds she can’t hear due to progressive hearing loss that started in childhood. With Trooper by her side, Sofia is working on her master’s degree in bustling New York City. And, she doesn’t have to worry about missing a fire alarm, traffic behind her or someone knocking on her door – Service Dog Trooper is always listening. 💪There's no greater gift than a gift of greater independence. Every gift makes a direct impact to help more children, adults and veterans with disabilities live their lives to the fullest. ➡️ Learn more about our Make Every Day Independence Day campaign: canine.org/independence24 #LeadWithIndependence #hearingdog #donate #fundraiser #fundraising #independence

#PTSDAwarenessDay As a fire support specialist in the US Army, Cpl. David Medina’s job was to penetrate enemy lines, face harsh hand-to-hand combat and call in airstrikes in Iraq. His life changed when he was wounded in combat when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device that left him with a brain injury and physical injuries, as well as severe hearing loss. War also left invisible wounds – cognitive issues and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “Coming home was a different kind of mission,” David says. “I saw things no one wants to see. When the adrenaline was gone, I really felt the injuries. The physical and psychological change was 180 degrees.” His #servicedog, Kellen - provided to him from Canine Companions, free of charge - not only enhances his independence by retrieving crutches and dropped items and opening doors and more; he's also specifically trained to mitigate symptoms of PTSD. Tasks, like anxiety interruption and creating a buffer in crowds, have been life-altering for David’s ability to connect with the world around him. “When we’re in public, I can manage better because Kellen makes that space. I feel more at ease,” David remarks. “I am more comfortable in the world because of Kellen.” David can participate in his life more fully – from kayaking and cycling to spending time with his family and making new memories – knowing that Kellen has his back no matter what he needs. #Veterans, children and adults with disabilities need your help. 💙 Learn more about how to make every day Independence Day: canine.org/independence24 #LeadWithIndependence #donate #fundraiser #fundraising #independence #giveback #usarmy #ptsd U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

“Mira will change the world for me," says US Navy veteran Jason Brooks, who's experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for over 12 years. “I have a hard time being with people, large crowds,” says Jason, a former Avionics Tech 2nd Class, who was stationed in the Middle East after September 11. His anxiety and PTSD can also be triggered by loud noises and fireworks. “It’s really kind of hampered my family’s ability to go places,” Jason shares. But, now, in addition to his family, friends and health providers, he has another partner by his side, an expertly trained #servicedog named Mira. She'll not only provide greater independence, but will also mitigate PTSD symptoms - so he can lead with independence. 🐕🦺 With Independence Day around the corner, it's time to give back to #veterans who served to protect our country. ➡️ Learn more about our Make Every Day Independence campaign: canine.org/independence24 Read his full story: https://lnkd.in/g6r3FA7D #LeadWithIndependence #veteran #usnavy #PTSDAwarenessMonth #IndependenceDay #Donate #donations #fundraiser #military #ptsd U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

For over 20 years, U.S. Air Force and Air National Guardsman veteran Michael Brennan faced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) without a #servicedog. He believed that another veteran was more worthy of the human-canine partnership than he was. After learning about Canine Companions from a fellow veteran, Michael applied for a service dog and was matched with Claudio in May of 2023 - and his life changed. Claudio is trained to help Michael by interrupting nightmares, turning lights on in a darkened room, creating space in a crowded public environment and interrupting anxious behaviors - which you can see in this video. Recently, The PenFed Foundation has named Michael the National Community Hero for his advocacy in encouraging other veterans to apply for #servicedogs. In addition, they generously donated $25,000, in his honor, to us to help our mission, giving him a chance to name a future service dog, a canine partner who will change another person's life, just like Claudio has done for him. Thank you to the PenFed Foundation for recognizing the immense impact our service dogs have on our veterans and for helping make a lifetime of difference. 🐕🦺 Watch the video for his reaction: https://bit.ly/4cN5HdF ➡️ Change the lives of more veterans with a $50K dollar-for-dollar match donation: canine.org/independence24 #LeadWithIndependence #community #veteran #airforce #nationalguard #ptsd #partnership
