About us

CAMBA serves more than 65,000 individuals and families each year, citywide, including almost 13,000 youth. Our 180+ programs in over 100 locations improve the lives of a diverse cross section of New Yorkers. From homelessness prevention in Staten Island to supportive housing in the Bronx; from employment training in Manhattan to after school programs and college access in Brooklyn; from family shelter and support in Queens to increasing affordable housing across the city, CAMBA provides holistic services to help struggling New Yorkers stabilize their lives and become self-sufficient. More than half of our clients are immigrants and refugees from around the globe. Over 85% of our families live in poverty. We’re working to change that dynamic so individuals, families, and New York City communities can thrive and succeed. A lot goes into securing a story like this one, featuring our client, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. It starts with having a communications team with the sensitivity to deploy an asset-based storytelling lens—that is, communications professionals who recognize that the children in this piece are more than the hardships they’ve endured but are young agents in their own lives, with dreams and voices worth listening to. Next, we seek out journalists with a similar track record of respect for the dignity of those they report on. From there, it's a lot of logistical coordination and legwork to secure permissions from participants, partnering providers, and relevant city agencies; we rely on the relationships we've cultivated over years spent building trust. The result is a beautiful NY Times piece that offers a window into the inner lives of children experiencing homelessness and the impact of the vital services, like music therapy, that are delivered with such care and expertise by our city's nonprofit sector.
