Environmental Services
A national community dedicated to empowering Black girls, women and non-binary people across the climate sector.
About us
Black Girl Environmentalist is a national community dedicated to empowering Black girls, women and non-binary people in the climate movement. We create pathways for emerging climate leaders of color to thrive across environmental disciplines through the areas of: community building, green workforce development, and narrative change. BGE was founded by climate activist and Rhodes Scholar Wawa Gatheru. Having been in the environmental and climate space for almost ten years, Wawa could not help but notice that while Black girls and women exist at the forefront of environmental injustice, they were amongst the least supported or celebrated in the mainstream environmental movement. She founded BGE to help cultivate opportunities for BGE's to be supported and empowered. BGE is collectively committed to centering Black women and non-binary folks in the environmental movement while shifting inequitable power structures that create barriers to access environmental disciplines. Our ultimate goal is to help create a climate movement made in the image of all of us.

Our DC HUB has been on a roll! Two weeks ago, our DC HUB hosted their second event of the year, an interpretive hike through Rock Creek Park, guided by the fabulous wildlife biologist Sharon Dorsey! Our HUB had a ton of fun using the SEEK app to identify plants and native species, contributing to important research nationwide. Huge thanks to our HUB lead Samantha Miller and our community for showing up! Looking for more opportunities to connect with our DC community? We will be hosting a screening of the documentary “To the End” happening THIS Sunday, June 16th at 6:30pm EST at Patagonia Old Town in Alexandria, VA. We’d love to have you there! #washingtondc #environmentaljustice #Blackgirlenvironmentalist

Team Black Girl Environmentalist… in style✨ Last week, our Executive Director Wawa Gatheru & Fellowship Manager Kwolanne Felix joined the Coach Foundation for Dream Day in New York City! Last fall, Black Girl Environmentalist was announced as the first ever Catalyst Fund grantee of Coachtopia ✨ As a recipient, Wawa and Kwolanne were invited to speak on the Dream Day stage to share about the entrepreneurship journey, youth-led advocacy, and our Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship. It was wonderful to connect with our fellow grantees, Earth Guardians and Maya who are both leading incredible initiatives! We are so excited for our Hazel M. Johnson Fellow Emma Abercrombie Peters to begin her summer internship with the wonderful team at @coachtopia ⭐️

We are so excited to finally announce that Black Girl Environmentalist has been selected as a Spring 2024 grantee partner of The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice! The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice was launched in 2019 to support groups led by Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian American, and Pacific Islander women and other frontline leaders in the US South that are playing impactful roles but have historically lacked access to funding. As a new grantee, this funding will be used to support our general capacity and upcoming BIPOC Climate Creator program. Like the Hive Fund, Black Girl Environmentalist believes that we must rapidly transition to cleaner, renewable energy in ways that equitably redistribute leadership, ownership, and benefits to disinvested communities in the US South and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates regarding our future programming! We have a lot coming up! https://lnkd.in/eW7UqC6x #HiveFund #BlackGirlEnvironmentalist #EnvironmentalJustice
