revolutionizing the science of nerve repair™
About us
Axogen is the leading company focused specifically on the science, development and commercialization of technologies for peripheral nerve regeneration and repair. We are passionate about helping to restore peripheral nerve function and quality of life to patients with physical damage or discontinuity to peripheral nerves by providing innovative, clinically proven and economically effective repair solutions for surgeons and health care providers. Every day, people suffer traumatic injuries or undergo surgical procedures that impact the function of their peripheral nerves. Physical damage to a peripheral nerve, or the inability to properly reconnect peripheral nerves, can result in the loss of muscle or organ function, the loss of sensory feeling, or the initiation of pain. Axogen’s comprehensive portfolio of products focuses on helping patients touch, run, feel, kiss, smile and hug—some of the many things healthy peripheral nerves allow us to do.

Nerve regeneration isn't all about the axons. This enthralling work, published recently in Neuron, shows how important angiogenesis is in the early days post-injury and how signaling molecules that control vascular patterning in early development come back to life after injury. Resection of the mandible can be necessary for either benign or malignant pathologies. Dental implants and reconstruction of the mandible and surrounding soft tissues restore function and form. The transected nerve, however, may be left untreated. This new paper shows that nerve repair using an allograft resulted in fewer mandibular resection patients with chronic postsurgical pain and neuropathic pain compared to the control group whose nerves were not repaired. There is a growing need for more quality-of-life studies in mandibular reconstruction patients and this paper is an important step in that direction. Left untreated, even non-transected nerve injuries can lead to persistent pain, #neuromas, decreased mobility or even sensation loss. Nerve protection helps combat nerve tethering and may reduce the risk of future nerve compression, decreased nerve gliding and incomplete recovery. Dr. Kyle Eberlin says the topic of symptomatic neuromas is near and dear to his heart – and it shows in this review article! From neuropeptides to ion channels to surgical interventions, this review provides a detailed analysis of the "Biology and Pathophysiology of Symptomatic Neuromas" that you will not get anywhere else.
