ACEC New York was thrilled to be joined by 20 exceptional college engineering and high school students at our annual Metro Region Scholarship Luncheon on May 17 - one of our favorite events of the year. The program also featured a vote on our incoming slate of Metro Region Board members. The gathered crowd of students, families, school representatives, and engineering industry leaders were moved by the inspiring remarks of keynote speaker, Rizwan Baig, P.E., Chief Engineer of the The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Rizwan spoke about his personal journey from a young age in Karachi, to former professional cricket ambitions, to arriving in the U.S. at Newark Airport decades ago, to 34 years at the Port, up to his present role as Chief Engineer, where he is responsible for assets including the very airport he arrived at many years ago. Rizwan especially thanked his mentors, Kevin O’Toole and Rick Cotton, who have made a difference in his life and journey. Thank you to regional chair Thomas Schoettle, PE, BCEE, program chair Jared M. Green, PE, BC. GE, F.ASCE, NOMA, and event sponsors who make our programming possible: Patrick DiCerbo, Thornton Tomasetti, Risk Strategies Company, KS Engineers, P.C., SI Engineering, P.C., GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., LERA Consulting Structural Engineers, and all firms who sponsored scholarships!
