One of the best changes I've made this year is to set Mondays aside for projects, planning and admin. It's basically a client free day. Identifying where my stressors came from allows me to create my own three steps to keep "bad" stress at bay. Step 1: In the morning I do a brief guided mindfulness meditation using YouTube video. Just some deep breathing and visualising positives for the day's events. Step 2: At 12:34 (I heard this tip somewhere) I do a "check-in" on where I am emotionally. Sometimes my stressors come from conversations running in my head or worries about something I have to get to-With a series of questions I ask myself I am able to get a handle on things. Step 3: Fill out my gratitude journal at the end of the night - thinking of lessons learnt in the day and remembering "there are no failures, just lessons". Other times, I embrace stress.

And crunch as much work as possible during work sessions. We are not perfect and sometimes things don't go as planned. So it's important to have contingency plans in place in case things need to be flexed. Communicate with your clients often and keep them in the loop. They will appreciate you for it and in my experience, having good communication with the client eases both their minds and mine. Most importantly, always sharpen your skills and get better over time. Work on becoming efficient, learn your tools and be effective at work.

I've found that work takes longer than I planned and need to review and adjust my time commitments quarterly, monthly and weekly. Determine your personality type (extrovert? introvert? ambivert?) & figure out how you gain/lose energy accordingly (love people time? hate people time?). Then, plan your freelance work to ensure that you're ending your workday or project with a net gain in energy. Also, identify your professional social needs and make sure to fulfil them accordingly. Yes, we do also have social needs that are more professional in nature! These could be attending monthly industry meetups, taking in-person upskilling courses annually, or utilising coworking spaces.
