The bravest thing to do is acknowledge that you didn't do something as well as you could have. Be humble enough to accept this, and truly embrace feedback. And then, take action on that feedback until it becomes muscle memory. I've found that ignoring negative feedback only comes back to haunt me, sometimes years later, as our blindspots don't ever really go away.

Although it is valuable to receive feedback from colleagues within the organization, it may be more challenging to accept comments neutrally. Maybe you feel that the person has a hidden agenda, you take the criticism too personally or you are too senior and no one dares to criticise you. It may be useful therefore to seek feedback elsewhere. Try to find a mentor or join a Toastmasters Club where you receive training on how to give feedback. This is also how you will be assessed: with respect, an eye for your good features and constructive tips with concrete examples. If done well of course. I completely changed how I review my team members based on what I have learned at Toastmasters.

When I wrote 'The Prosperity Equation' in 2000, one concept in the book is 'Pillars of Prosperity'. One of those 'Pillars' was 'Gather People'. I theorize 'The Most Powerful People on Earth are those people that influence the most other people.' Influence is Power, Money is only Measurement. The more relevant people in the inner circle of those you influence is real wealth. I have more than 150,000 relevant people on Social Media platforms. Many people have greater numbers but most of my connections and friends online are 'relevant', either in the speaking profession or the auto industry, my two areas of expertise and influence. This level of networking-influence has translated into a lot of income and repeat business relationships.

Reflection is a critical life skill. It supercharges growth and accelerates development! Taken too far this can become over-thinking, worry, regret, consternation. But not taken far enough, you risk not growing into the leader that you could be. Feedback from others is great but nothing like some good self introspection. I’ve found it important to reflect daily. My routine for this is reading every morning. Other options include driving in silence or sitting outside for a few moments after work to recap the day. Did you say too much? Or not enough? Did you act too swiftly? Or do you need to exhibit more patience? Reflection helps with being the balanced and centered leader your team and colleagues are craving!

Self-reflection is a must-have skill for thought leadership. It is best developed before we face obstacles on this path. We should build a habit of self-reflection by setting aside a fixed time, place, and method for doing reflecting daily. Then, we can add a habit of openness to understanding the nuances in the feelings, bodily changes, thoughts, reactions, and behaviours that we manifest in specific circumstances. Openness to understanding ourselves better, acceptance of what we understand, and the maturity to develop what is needed to face other similar circumstances will give us the confidence to face obstacles in our thought leadership career better.

Self reflection, self awareness and self regulation are an important part of navigating setbacks. The first thing is to step away and give yourself a break - clarity does not come when emotions are high. Once ready start building a perspective by writing down all the components you are feeling, gain some perspective of it, challenge what is the truth and what isnt, reflect and consider what you might have handled differently. A coach can help with this too. Setbacks are part of learning and often taking a break and building a perspective through reflection (when you are ready) may make you feel differently.

Our selfreflection is looked at from our believes, mostly the unconscious ones (90%) and our stresslevels. To give yourself the best opportunity of positive self reflection you have to make sure you do not have high stresslevels. Measure them (heartcoherence sensor) so you are sure what you do need to do before reflecting: stress reduction techniques till you actually séé you are relaxed. You might think you féél relaxed but believe me, most of the times you are not. I trained more then 7000 people in heartcoherence where they always can see their stresslevel on a screen. 95% procent of the time they "feel" relaxed but the screen show them the opposite. So be aware....

Taking a helicopter view on self, taking stock of things, dis-engaging with your work and actions briefly.....sitting & thinking, thinking...& more thinking, helps in gauging & deploying corrective actions. Some people find navigating through obstacles and setbacks as challenging and their personality traits and value system aid them in a smoother process. Many see the setbacks as opportunities while others take a pause to reflect and understand the reasons for the same. Objectively a conscious effort has to be made in developing a curious mindset so that such events do not overwhelm you. Reaching out for feedback or a talk to understand the situation always helps. I think the very definition of thought leadership is obstacles and setbacks. After all thought leadership doesn’t mean following the trail blazed by others, but creating new trails that others can try and add to. Obstacles are where we learn. It how you handle them that defines success or failure. Winston Churchill said it best, “Never, never, never, never quit”. In my world, it’s “Be the Buffalo 🦬”. It’s the only mammal that runs toward a storm (in this case obstacle), to get through it quicker. Prepare, try, analyze and try again. You got this!

Learn to navigate between order and chaos. Order is explored territory, the structured society. It's when everything is working according to plan. Chaos is unexplored territory. It is the place you find yourself when things fall apart. Chaos is obstacles and setbacks, it's where new ideas destroy old and comfortable certainties. Embracing change and seeking innovation is always a good idea but resist the temptation of throwing the baby out with the bath water. Don't throw away all the things that are working well. Overcoming obstacles and setbacks means that you keep one foot solidly planted in known territories (areas that you have mastered and understood) and put the other foot in unexplored territories, where innovation reigns supreme.

Ask for help! Be open to help! Honestly, reach out to anyone and everyone. Recently, a 5-year old helped me by suggesting that I eat more slowly. He was totally right! Asking for help: - Brings in new ideas - Activates other leaders to your cause - Shows you gaps between where you are and where you want to be - Helps you do more with "less" (more from others, less from you) - Levels up your collaborative skills
