What are the most user-friendly translation memory tools for freelance translators?

Translation Memory (TM) streamlines your workflow by highlighting repetitions and potential matches based on percentages. This ensures consistency across your translations. However, TM is flexible! If the context doesn't fit perfectly, you can edit or add information using dedicated tools. These tools allow the TM to learn and store the new context, improving future translations and boosting your overall productivity

TMs are the most precious things for most translators. When you have multiple clients with whom you've been working for years, it's not possible to remember all the terms in every project. That's where translation memories come in handy. You can come back quickly to something that was translated years later and keep the same terms consistent. There are lots of CAT tools on the market where you can have your TMs, but I personally like using SDL Trados Studio. It really speeds up your working time. Besides, your clients know their project is in safe hands. TMs and CAT tools are on your PC, so no confidential information is revealed on the Internet like it happens when translators use some online free translation tools.

Smartcat (free), PhraseTM (cheap and tailored prices) and MemoQ (premium prices). I like these three and they are the ones I prefer to use. Smartcat is missing many features, but it has the essentials, it's growing in utility and it streamlines and simplifies and invoicing process. PhraseTM has all you need, and, in many cases, agencies provide you with access to the tool, so freelance translators like us don't need to purchase a license. Lastly, MemoQ is, in my opinion, 100 times better than Trados, it runs smoothly and the team keeps adding amazing features. I just don't understand why so many enterprises and organisms keep using Trados.

Ensure the tool can handle diverse document types, which is crucial for smooth operations across different translation projects. A good search function is key. It should enable you to locate precise translations quickly, streamlining your process and reducing repetitive work. In Trados, I use the shortcut F3 to find terms easily and quickly. TM tools, like Trados, for example, include document analysis features that identify repetitive content. They generate reports that show the number of fuzzy matches, 100% matches, and repetitions in your document.

Doing this will help so you don't lose your hard work: Backing up your local TMs to the cloud offers extra flexibility and peace of mind. This way, if your device breaks, gets stolen, or malfunctions, you won't have to rebuild everything from scratch. While local storage is convenient, consider enabling cloud backups whenever you have internet access to ensure your TMs are always safe.

I actually prefer to work on local TMs, but sometimes you just need to work in a cloud environment, and that's OK, too. But it's much safer when you work on your own TMs installed on your PC.

It's worth noting that while cloud-based TM tools offer accessibility and flexibility, local solutions often provide more robust features and customization options. An emerging trend in TM tools is the hybrid approach, which combines the benefits of both cloud-based and local solutions. With a hybrid TM, you can enjoy the flexibility of cloud access while retaining control over sensitive data by keeping certain segments locally stored.

MateCat is a online CAT tool that is easy to use, free and open source. It give you access to a market place where you can buy or sell translation directly from the app. It handles among other format the XML files of Help&Manuals a popular tool for writing user manuals

TMs are only helpful when translators can communicate with each other to ensure consistency across Translations. Otherwise it just doesn't work. I love how CAT tools such as Phrase can save translations across multiple tasks and help you compare to note differences between the source segment and the TM suggestion. So yes, TM is helpful only when users are careful.
