Through our large-scale global network, we are well placed to address global challenges through local actions.
We recognize our duty to donate talents, time and resources to benefit greater society. Whether donating money, volunteering time or legal counsel, or bringing awareness to important causes, we invest in community programs to ensure our people can bring their passions and purpose-led selves to work.
Our people are supported and empowered to make an impact on the communities and causes that matter most to them.
Our global partnership with the International Rescue Committee
Eversheds Sutherland is a proud global partner of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the global non-profit organization that helps people affected by humanitarian crises.
Highlights of our work in the community
WaterAid is an international charity whose mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. It is recognized as an innovative charity and acts as a key driver in enabling global social mobility.
Eversheds Sutherland has supported WaterAid for several years. This June, we hosted a Global Running Day fundraising and awareness campaign to support WaterAid. Nearly 400 colleagues around the globe completed a run or walk, and our collective efforts raised more than $14,000. The funds supported an important WaterAid project – providing clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene in Manjakandriana, Madagascar.

Each year, our US offices participate in the annual Fall Giving campaign where we come together for a two-week fundraiser to support local nonprofit partners and charities that our people care about most. During our 2022 Fall Giving campaign, we raised an incredible $153,000. A sincere thanks to all our people for their generosity and for participating in the campaign.
During this year’s campaign, we also hosted several community service events across our offices:
- Colleagues in our New York office partnered with United Way of New York City to pack 800 cold weather preparedness kits.
- In our Austin office, colleagues partnered with United Way for Greater Austin to prepare hygiene kits for individuals experiencing homelessness throughout Travis County.
- Our San Diego office partnered with the San Diego Center for Children to put together food bags for families receiving services at the Center.
- Colleagues in our Atlanta office partnered with Helping Mamas to pack kits with essential items for newborns and toddlers.
- In our Washington DC office, colleagues partnered with Bread for the City to pack 600 hygiene and personal care kits.
- Our Houston office partnered with United Way of Greater Houston to put together literacy kits for children.

Together with the firm’s Charitable Trust, we launched a bursary program in remembrance of two of our colleagues, Scott Wagland and Gemma Curtis. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the bursary’s launch. The bursary covers the university tuition fees in full for the period of the students’ law degree. The bursary was brought in to compliment the Unlocked work experience program. All participants are invited to submit an application.
As part of the program, we also provide the students with a partner and an associate mentor. The mentors support the bursary students throughout their degrees and provide them with a weeks' worth of work experience. There is also the opportunity to secure vacation scheme placements.
We are currently supporting 10 bursary students.
On the impact of the initiative, one bursary recipient remarked:
“The bursary awarded was life-changing and I'm forever grateful for such an opportunity. The bursary ensured that law was accessible without the barrier of financial burden. The support I have received from Eversheds Sutherland has been amazing, as they have supported me with each step of the way.”
Our Chicago office recently came together with members from the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Chicago for a community service event supporting Chicago Youth Centers (CYC)!
Volunteers packed more than 500 holiday stockings filled with educational toys, games, activities and treats for children in the Chicago community.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who participated and to Eversheds Sutherland Partner Lance Phillips for serving as CYC Board Member and supporting CYC’s important mission in the Chicago community.
About Chicago Youth Centers:
For 65 years, CYC has been the place Where Possibility Lives: a trusted partner in Chicago’s most divested neighborhoods, ensuring that kids have a safe place they can go to explore, to discover, to process, and ultimately to envision a bright future that they can create for themselves. In early learning classrooms, afterschool programs, and summer day camps, youth ages 15 months to 18 years find joy in learning, grow socially and emotionally, and build skills for the jobs of tomorrow. CYC students are deeply engaged, with many attending our hands-on clubs five days a week, 48 weeks a year.
Together, with families, schools, supporters, and a network of extracurricular program partners, CYC boldly envisions a Chicago where every child has the resources, experiences, and mentors they need to pursue lives of endless possibility.
