Thanks to the tremendous response and great feedback we've received from the BOLT user community, we are happy to announce that we are releasing BOLT 2.5 with a host of new features and optimizations designed to improve usability, robustness and stability, including:
BOLT is a fast mobile browser that offers an uncompromised browsing experience on even entry-level mobile phones. It is compatible with virtually any handset with Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) 2.0 support. In non-geek speak, this means "it works on lots of phones, even basic ones."
Rather than offering a simplified, mini version of the Internet, BOLT provides users with an efficient, feature-rich way to enjoy full PC-style Web pages and rich media applications on all levels of mobile devices.
Yes. BOLT offers lightning fast, secure, PC-style Web browsing on high and low-end devices - you do not need a smartphone to use BOLT.
BOLT is a full featured mobile Web browser that supports widgets, direct Twitter and Facebook integration, streaming videos, RSS feeds, social media sites, Google Maps- you name it.
BOLT is currently available in English, Spanish, and Russian.
BOLT supports viewing Web sites in all Latin-based languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Flemish, Swedish, and many others that are fundamentally Latin-based. Using the "Install Fonts" utility, you can also view Web sites in Cyrillic-based languages including Bulgarian, Russian, Belarusian, Serbian, Macedonian, Ukrainian, Moldovan, Kazakh, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Tuvan and Mongolian.
Yes. BOLT uses a unique profile and does not interfere with your device's default browser in any way. However, it may bruise your default browser's ego. Don't say we didn't warn you.
BOLT lite was created in response to user requests, to allow BOLT to run on resource-constrained mobile devices with limited memory, CPU power, and bandwidth. While not as feature-rich as the regular version, BOLT lite features a small footprint (~154 KB) while retaining the benefits of BOLT's client/server technology, resulting in extremely fast downloading of Web site content and reduced data cost.
BOLT lite requires MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.0 or higher support.
BOLT lite does not support the orientation settings (landscape or portrait), inline videos, video settings, transport protocol settings, copy-paste operations, favorites/feeds organization, inline editing, find in page feature, download manager, password manager, QWERTY shortcut keys for navigation, widgets, or 3XL magnification.
BOLT BlackBerry Launcher is a plug-in for BlackBerry devices (BlackBerry OS version 4.3 and above). After installation, it will enable you to open any link in plain-text email or SMS/MMS, in BOLT. Simply select “Open with BOLT” via the left menu key to open links directly in BOLT.
Install the BOLT BlackBerry Launcher in addition to the BlackBerry specific version of BOLT. When you wish to open a link in a plain-text email or SMS/MMS link, select “Open in BOLT” via the left menu key, and it will open the link directly in BOLT.
Yes. You can view BOLT web demo at BOLT Demo
Widgets offer users a faster, streamlined way to view, update and interact with popular websites and online tools and to discover new-web based services.
Widgets can be installed directly from BOLT for faster execution.
BOLT can be installed on nearly all Java-based handsets since the browser requires only Java MIDP 2 and CLDC 1.0 or higher support.
Yes. BOLT runs well on Palm-powered devices with J2ME support.
Yes, BOLT works well with BlackBerry devices.
If you have a BlackBerry, you will need to install the BlackBerry-specific version of BOLT.
Yes. BOLT runs well on selected Windows Mobile 6 devices including HTC Touch, MOTO Q, MOTO Q9c (with Windows Mobile 6.1 OS) and MOTO Q9h. However, BOLT does not support MOTO Q 8 Windows Mobile device.
Each mobile device implements a set of security policies that determine if an application is allowed to run. As a security measure, some devices require downloaded applications to be signed with an appropriate certificate to be allowed to run.
BOLT is signed with third-party certificates from VeriSign and Thawte. These "signatures" enable the device OS to confirm BOLT's authenticity, provide access to secure device APIs, and help ensure that BOLT is free from malware and/or viruses. Signed applications enable you to use BOLT with fewer permission dialogs for file and network access from your device's OS.
However, a few platforms including Motorola P2K do not allow installation of signed builds. To enable installation on these devices, an unsigned version of BOLT, with no certificate, is also offered.
We recommend you install the signed versions (dual signed, VeriSign, or Thawte) first. If you have any trouble installing any of these three versions, install the unsigned version.
If you have a BlackBerry, you will need to install the BlackBerry-specific version of BOLT.
Downloading BOLT is a one-step process. You can quickly and easily install BOLT wirelessly using your phone's default browser.
Direct your phone's default browser to http://www.boltbrowser.com/download.html and complete the registration process. You will be directed to a Web page with five download links. Click the appropriate download link and simply follow the onscreen instructions on your phone until the installation process is complete. You will also be emailed the download links at the email address you provide while registering.
Different phones place downloaded applications in different places. Your device may place BOLT on the desktop, or it may file it under Applications, Games, Downloads or File Manager. Click the BOLT icon once to start browsing using BOLT.
If you are unable to locate BOLT on your phone, refer to your device's user guide.
Try the BOLT lite version.
The latest version of BOLT is 2.1. You can find the version installed on your device by going to Menu>Get Help and selecting "About".
If you are running an older version, simply quit and restart BOLT and you will be prompted to upgrade.
As soon as a new version is released BOLT will prompt you to upgrade. If BOLT discovers an older version installed on your device, a message to upgrade to the new release is displayed when you initiate a browsing session. If you skip the upgrade, BOLT will prompt again to download and install the latest version after 24 hours.
No. BOLT will install the new version directly over the current version installed on your device, and will save all of your favorites, history, feed subscriptions and browsing preferences.
When you upgrade, select “Keep Application Data” to save all your BOLT-specific data.
Yes. BOLT preserves your Favorites, History and subscribed feeds lists on upgrading.
To install the latest release, you will have to re-register at http://www.boltbrowser.com/download.html to get the download link. Please be sure to use the same information (email address) you used when you initially signed up and you will be directed to a Web page with the download links, which will also be emailed to you.
Yes. You can use the older version of BOLT on your device. While we agree that the older version of BOLT is pretty sweet, we do recommend installing the latest release, as new features and bug-fixes are continuously being added.
Generally, you will be connected directly to the Internet by simply launching BOLT.
However, in a limited number of cases, you may have to set up a new IAP (Internet access point) the first time you connect to the Internet through BOLT. An Internet Access Point (IAP) is a GPRS or high-speed connection provided by your telecom provider.
Most mobile operators have a service that enables you to automatically setup an IAP via SMS. Please check your phone's documentation for directions on how to do this.
Now open a Web page in BOLT and select the IAP (Internet access point) you wish to connect through. Your phone will now automatically establish a connection with the Internet.
Note: You cannot use a WAP gateway as your Internet access point. Consult your phone's help documentation to learn about adding an access point.
BOLT runs independent of the network layer. You can connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi, GPRS, 3G, ActiveSync or EDGE on enabled devices.
On a BlackBerry device, BOLT tries to connect to the Internet in the following order,
No, you have to separately download and install the BlackBerry Launcher plug-in here: Download Launcher

Split-screen mode features a rectangular magnifier floating over a zoomed out minimap of the entire Web page on the top 2/3 of the screen and a magnified view of the content under the magnifier on the bottom 1/3 of the screen. The magnifier floating over the minimap enables you to quickly find information and navigate Web sites with ease. Simply click the "5" hotkey to toggle between split-screen mode (for ease of navigation) and full-screen mode (for ease of reading).
Yes. All hyperlinks are clickable in split-screen mode.
Press "5" to toggle between split-screen and full-screen modes.
* Feature not applicable for BlackBerry 8100, 8200, and 7100 series devices
Yes. The BOLT client intercepts the outgoing HTTP request and checks if the response is in the cache. If the response is available, the Web page is loaded from the cache and a network connection is not required, resulting in faster loading and decreased data usage. BOLT's caching is session-based, so the cache is automatically cleared each time you exit BOLT.
Use the u and n keys to move up/down a screen and h and k to scroll left/right on a Web page. Navigating via the keypad is much faster than the trackball.
No. You can move in all directions on a Web page by rolling the trackball on your BlackBerry. If you are experiencing any trackball-scrolling issues, we recommend that you restart BOLT on your device.
No. BOLT displays content incrementally as it is downloading, enabling you to start enjoying content before the entire page is loaded.
Yes. You can navigate around a Web page with an arrow pointer similar to navigation with a mouse on a PC. The arrow pointer changes to an active pointer (hand-icon) when it moves over a clickable item.
BOLT has a separate section of BOLT Space and it allows following functionalities: -
There may be additional options added to BOLT Space in the future.
BOLT provides a Preferences page to customize the way the browser loads and displays web content. You can change Magnification, Image Quality, Video Quality, Video Settings, Text Entry mode, Protocol (HTTP or Socket), Page Style (mobile or desktop view), Viewing mode (split-screen or full screen view), Orientation (landscape or portrait), Language (English, Spanish, and Russian), and BOLT Space (online account settings). BOLT’s preferences also offer Font Installation and the ability to Clear Private Data settings. To change Preferences:
The current Web page will be refreshed to reflect the new settings you applied, and all future sessions will continue to support the preferences you have selected (except the page orientation settings).
The Video Quality setting is disabled for devices that do not support the MP4 file format.
HTTP and Socket are used as the underlying transport protocols while establishing a connection between BOLT client and servers. With Socket, the connection between client-server is made once, and remains active throughout a session. With HTTP, a connection request is sent to the BOLT server each time a Web page request is sent from the client.
If your device does not support the Socket connection, we recommend you turn ON the HTTP transport mode to continue browsing.
With Socket connections enabled, BOLT offers faster performance because a reconnection with the BOLT servers is not required each time you request a Web page. You can expect a speed increase of up to 15% with sockets enabled, assuming your carrier supports this setting.
Yes. BOLT enables toggling between the portrait and landscape screen orientations. To switch to Landscape orientation,
Yes. All browser features are available in landscape mode with the exception of streaming video playback, which currently only works in portrait mode.

Acid3 is a test page from the Web Standards Project that tests how well a web browser support certain web standards. The compliance criteria require that the test is run with a browser's default settings. The percentage displayed is based on the number of subtests passed. The final rendering must have a 100/100 score and must be pixel-identical with the reference rendering.
As the Acid3 test is run, rectangles are added to the rendered image; the color of the rectangles is decided by the number of subtests passed in the bucket. If all subtests fail in a particular bucket, its associated rendered rectangle will be invisible.
Yes. Launch BOLT on your mobile device and enter the url http://www.acid3.acidtests.org. Press Menu>Go to load the requested URL.

Yes. When you connect to an ecommerce site, such as ebay or amazon.com, BOLT employs a secure connection that uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to encrypt the transaction between the BOLT server and the web-site. The connection between the device and the BOLT server is also encrypted.
We recommend that you enable HTTPS when browsing secure Web pages using BOLT. A few secure (HTTPS) Web pages fail to load due to device restrictions or the proxy blocking port 443. To overcome this limitation, BOLT created a lightweight cryptographic algorithm to encrypt secure Web pages. To enable this light encryption mechanism, select "Preferences" from the "Menu", uncheck the "HTTPS" check box and select "Save".

Manage Favorites is a new feature in BOLT 2.3 to backup the favorites online as well as on the device’s memory. It helps to save the favorites in following situations when,
In BOLT Lite, the user can only save the favorites online at BOLT Space.
Favorites give users the functionality to save links of visited Web sites in browser without having to remember their Web addresses. In desktop browser, the users make backup of favorites to ensure their safety. This feature is common in desktop browsers but not much prevalent in the mobile browsers.
Bitstream understands the users’ need to protect the favorites, so we brought this new feature – "Manage Favorites" that allows taking backup directly from BOLT.
Favorites can be saved in device memory using Manage favorite feature. If your device supports PC Sync or any File Transfer feature, then you can copy this file at computer or any other device. The same file can be reused to import the favorites, regardless of the device platform (BREW, BlackBerry OS, J2ME or Symbian OS). However, it is necessary that BOLT is supported and installed on that device.
Moreover, we also provide the option to save the Favorites online at BOLT Space within your account. Now, the users can be rest assured that their favorites are with them irrespective of the device they are using. They just need to use BOLT browser to access the BOLT Space for retrieving the favorites and start browsing.
You can also import the favorites exported from BOLT to BOLT Lite and vice versa. This will help you to transfer the favorites if you are changing the device or location.
