In 2018, Innovate UK and the Department for Transport launched a Contracts for Innovation challenge to develop solutions for improving transport accessibility. Recognising the barriers disabled and older passengers face when arranging assistance for train travel, Transreport secured funding to develop their award-winning Passenger Assistance app. Now used by 700,000 people across the UK, the app significantly improves accessibility and customer satisfaction by reducing the assistance booking period from 24 hours to just two hours. Innovate UK are experts in the application and delivery of Contracts for Innovation in the UK. Over 100 public sector organisations have successfully used this unique, mutually beneficial funding mechanism, leading to groundbreaking projects solving challenges faced across the public sector. Innovation Accelerator Pilot led by Innovate UK on behalf of UKRI, Fuels Local Growth ✅ £100 million investment ✅ 26 innovative projects ✅ Three high-potential city regions across the UK West Midlands spotlight 🔦 We’re pleased to have supported ‘The Biochar CleanTech Accelerator’ project, led by the Energy & Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) at Aston University, with a £1.8 million investment. The project is developing innovative technology to transform organic material such as sawdust or fallen and diseased trees, dried chicken manure and agricultural straw into commercially valuable bioproducts. The low carbon biochar is a sustainable form of charcoal which can be used as a soil and plant growth enhancer.
