Tags from glitterarygetsit: time for the story of the best thing i've ever found on a dig. it was a piece of bone with grooves filed into it. early medieval - 9th c or so. clearly it had been intended to become a comb. but it had snapped while being made: a crack ran down from one of the grooves. so i knew that the last person to touch this bone - before it lay there for a thousand years or so - the very last thing they'd done with it was go "ah fuck" and throw it to the ground in frustration. and the next person to pick it up was me. i've never felt as connected to anyone from the past as i did to this northumbrian comb-maker. people have always been people. archaeology. it's a bit like time-travel.
