Yelloway congratulates it's partner, Professor Gert HJ Kema for being rewarded with the 2024 KNPV-prize for his special contribution to phytopathology in particular and crop protection in general. The KNPV Prize is awarded by the KNPV Plantenziektekundige Vereniging (translated: Royal Dutch Plant Protection Association) to a person who has made a special contribution to the development of resilient crops in the Netherlands. Professor Kema is praised for his "visible and enterprising research into sustainable crop protection". The jury report states (translated) : “Prof. Dr. Ir. Ing. G.H.J. (Gert) Kema is a man with vision, passion and entrepreneurial spirit. He inspires people who are active in research and/or practice. He gives society great visibility of crop protection research through interviews on radio and TV and in newspapers and through popular science publications at home and abroad. He has set up many large international research projects together with the (inter)national business community. This is with the aim of generating impact for sustainable crop protection. A unique spin-off from these projects are the new Dutch banana breeding companies. During his long career, Gert Kema has made an exceptional commitment to scientific research and education in crop protection. He first worked on Septoria leaf spot disease in grains and from 2010 on crop-threatening fungal diseases of the banana. His research has been recorded in 120 scientific publications. Since 2018, Gert Kema has led the Phytopathology department at Wageningen University & Research and in that capacity has trained many students and supervised many PhD candidates. At Yelloway we are conventionally breeding bananas with the help of state of the art technology, in order to achieve our goal of breeding more resistant and sustainable bananas 🍌. As you can see from this short video from Fernando A. García-Bastidas, the actual pollination to create crosses is done manually. Often the pollination can only be done in a very limited timeframe, and since it's a natural process, it's not something that can be planned exact and therefore it requires the team to be flexible .

Earth day 2024 🌍 The perfect moment to look back at what #Yelloway has accomplished in the past years and look forward with confidence on achieving our goals to breed disease resistant bananas, with a lower carbon footprint. Yelloway - has successfully established a greenhouse that meets our unique requirements - has been successful in growing more than 1,000 banana plants representing over 150 types of bananas among cultivated and wild relatives - has sequenced and assembled the genome of several types of banana plants - is now capable of classifying, understanding, and selecting the best parents - has developed additional molecular tools for breeding thanks to DNA technology, including: Molecular markers to facilitate breeding, identification of potential genes of interest, and new protocols for disease-testing for Black Sigatoka and Fusarium TR4 - made a range of unique crosses, which allowed us to develop improved parents with different traits such as resistance - selected the offspring that will find their way into the field-trials throughout 2024 Together, the Yelloway partners Chiquita, KeyGene and MusaRadix want to be a driving force in creating a more sustainable and diverse banana industry. It's great when we have the chance to have Professor in phytopathology Gert HJ Kema explain what Fusarium wilt and Black Sigatoka are, how they affect banana plants and how Yelloway is working on a solution.
