Gwyn was the only one in the tattoo’s front room, idly sketching something on Procreate for one of her regulars, when she heard the familiar bell that signaled someone walking inside.
“Hi!” she called out, waving a freckled hand toward the newest customer. “Welcome to Valkyrie Tattoos. What can I help you with?”
She looked up and almost swallowed her tongue once she recognized Azriel, the very cute guy who worked at the library next door. She’d seen him from time to time when it was her turn to pick up whatever Nesta or Emerie had put on hold for book club, and seeing him here inside their tattoo parlor instead of surrounded by books was almost jarring.
“Hi,” Azriel responded quietly. God, he was so adorable, with his soft voice and his pretty eyes and the way he held himself in that cardigan. “I wanted to get a tattoo?”
“Okay,” she answered cheerily. She put down her iPad and switched over to the nearby computer, checking her calendar to make sure she had enough time for this. “My next appointment isn’t until 4, so if what you want isn’t too time-consuming I can squeeze you in now.”

“I have a surprise for you.”
Azriel looked up from where he was working on an assignment for his statistics class. He and Gwyn were hanging out in his apartment, him working on some homework while she lounged on his bed and scrolled through TikTok. “What kind of surprise are we talking, Berdara?”
His girlfriend lowered her phone and waggled her eyebrows at him in a move he was mostly sure she’d learned from Cassian. “The kind of surprise that should make you pretty happy.”
“So happy that it’ll be worth losing my place on this assignment?” he asked, calculating his final Z score for the problem he was working on. He had until 11:59 PM tomorrow to submit this assignment, so he was technically ahead of schedule, and he’d like to keep it that way if he could.
“I certainly think so,” she answered cheekily.
Curiosity getting the better of him, Azriel flagged the next question for him to come back to later before spinning in his desk chair to give his girlfriend his full attention. “What’s the surprise?”
“Do you need some help with those lights?” “No, I don’t. Stop asking me that.”

Azriel grinned to himself as he spotted his neighbor struggling valiantly to hang some lights over her porch, hastening his steps so he could ask her if she needed any help.
Gwyn had moved into the house a few months ago with two other women — best friends from college, he’d learned, after Cassian had struck up a conversation with one of them.
Their relationship had started out friendly enough. His brothers teased him about how introverted he could be, and his therapist had suggested trying to put himself out there more, so Azriel tried to say good morning and have a nice day whenever he saw one of his neighbors.

omg talk about a blast from the past!! first of all so honored that you followed me for that (and stuck around this long haha!) ❤️
I had so much fun writing that fic because we all know nessian has a lot of fun times in the bedroom, and poor Azriel would be SICK of them within about 5 minutes (and as someone who’s had loud neighbors I absolutely could relate lol). If I could’ve gotten some revenge other than banging on the wall hard to get my neighbors to shut up I would’ve been a much happier camper, lemme tell ya! So getting to write Gwynriel serving Nessian a taste of their own medicine was *chefs kiss* for me personally 🤣

“Your hands are sweaty,” Azriel notes with a hint of disgust as they climb past aisles of seats, searching for their row.
“They’re always like that,” Gwyn says cheerily, squeezing his palm tighter.
He makes a face and mutters something about forgetting hand sanitizer, but Gwyn doesn’t care as long he can’t tell how nervous she is.
Their seats are conveniently placed in the farthest reaches of the theater, hidden away in a corner dark enough that no one would see them even if they decided to straight up fuck in the seats. Gwyn takes the seat closest to the aisle so she can make a run for it if panic starts to descend on her. She knows Azriel won’t try anything she doesn’t explicitly want—well, she mostly knows. You can never be too sure with a man. That’s where the panic comes from.
She keeps her focus sternly glued to the previews as Azriel gets comfortable in the seat beside her. “You want a snack?” he murmurs over the sci-fi trailer playing in the background.
Gwyn throws him a look. “You just said five minutes ago we couldn’t have snacks.”
“Because I thought it would distract from your learning. Now I’m starting to think you need a distraction. Tell me what you want.” He’s already getting out of his seat.
Gwyn doesn’t hesitate before answering, “Twizzlers.”
Azriel makes a face. “I see your taste in sweets is still trash.”

Gwyn laughed as she scrolled through her for you page, relating a little too hard to the TikTok she’d just watched. She loved her boyfriend, she really did, but sometimes she wanted to take his computer away from him so she could be the one holding his attention instead of some stupid game.
Azriel was currently playing some building game — Minecraft, maybe? — but judging from the yells and shouts coming from their bedroom, she didn’t think much building was going on. Her boyfriend was normally relaxed while playing Minecraft, but if Gwyn had to guess, Cassian and Rhys were probably messing around on their shared server.
Still, she should probably check on him. She got off the couch and walked into their bedroom, watching Azriel furiously type commands into his keyboard while he soundly cursed Cassian out in Spanish. “You okay, Az?”
